World Cup News :: Paraguay qualify for World Cup 2010, Argentina in peril

Paraguay became the 11th nation to make it into the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa thanks to a 1-0 win over Argentina, whose qualification hopes took a further blow.

A 28th-minute strike by Nelson Haedo Valdez after a Salvador Cabanas assist was enough for Gerardo Martino's Guaranies to advance to their fourth FIFA World Cup in a row.

Argentina, meanwhile, had Juan Sebastian Veron sent-off in the second period and slipped down to fifth in the standings on 22 points, which would mean a play-off against a CONCACAF nation.

However, Uruguay and Venezuela both won, and are on 21 points now just one point further back, and threatening to overtake the wobbling Argentine side.
