PREVIEW
Miami have dropped 6 straight games now, having just been swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in their recent series. Today they host Boston, who too were swept by the Washington Nationals. One of these sides will finally earn themselves a win.
The Boston Red Sox start Josh Beckett tonight. The right-handed ex-Marlin is 4-6 with a 4.04ERA. Beckett was unlucky to suffer a loss in his last start as he gave up just 2 runs in 8 innings against Baltimore. Boston only scored 1 so the loss, due to a lack of run support, does not put me off backing him here.
The Miami Marlins are not doing well despite the high expectations set on the side after they rebranded and moved to a new home. Miami are giving up 5.12 per home game now with only a 16-16 record at Marlins Ballpark. They counter with Josh Johnson, who is 3-4 with a 4.56ERA. Johnson is also off a loss after dropping his last start, against Atlanta. He too gave up just 2 runs, over 6 innings, and his side lost 2-1.
What I am encouraged by is the way Boston are averaging over 5 runs per game, both overall and on the road, where they have a 15-12 winning record. The Sox are bottom of the AL East but expectations were high and I feel they are due a win after 3 straight losses. The side have the better pitcher on the mound, are scoring more runs than Miami and giving up fewer. With the price having swung to make Miami favourites, I feel we are getting a value underdog price with Boston.
BETTING VERDICT
I'm going with Boston to win tonights game.
