They have opened an 8.5 game lead in the National League West and the Los Angeles Dodgers (43-24) continue to produce stronger numbers both through the batting lineup and the pitching rotation. However, this is a team that is not resting on what they have and many have tipped the Dodgers to make a trade for one of the premier starting pitchers in the Major League to bolster their chances of winning a third World Series in succession.
Reports about Tarik Skubal will continue until the Detroit Tigers announce what they are going to do, but the Dodgers will be looking to maintain their own momentum having won three of the last four games. That includes the opener of this series with the Pittsburgh Pirates (34-33) who have lost five of the last six, including the last four in a row to fall 8 games behind in the National League Central.
The Pirates will hand the ball to Jared Jones who is making his third start of the season after missing the entirety of 2025.
Unsurprisingly the two previous starts have been erratic- Jared Jones gave up five runs in his first outing, but bounced back to hold the Houston Astros scoreless in the second. That saw Jones cover 5 Innings and he was awarded the decision win, although he will be well aware that he is facing a tough test against this Dodgers batting lineup.
Keeping up with Shohei Ohtani on the mound is going to be the other big challenge in front of Jared Jones and the Pirates team.
Shohei Ohtani has made ten starts on the mound this season and has a 6-2 record with a 0.74 ERA, which means he is holding the third best ERA in history after a ten game sample to open the year.
This season, Shohei Ohtani has only allowed more than a single run in one of the ten starts made and so even having two losses on the record feels incredibly harsh. He has won the decision in each of the last four starts and Ohtani has allowed a single run in 24 Innings covered across those, while also needing to be credited for continuing to churn out big hits at the plate.
One previous start against the Pittsburgh Pirates proved a tough one for Shohei Ohtani, but that was also in his time with the Los Angeles Angels.
Pittsburgh had won three in a row in the series before losing the opening game on Tuesday.
