Earlier this month, it felt like the Chicago Cubs had found a consistency that may have seen them push for the National League Central Divisional crown, but that momentum has slowed. It also becomes very difficult to try and close the gap to the leading team when the Milwaukee Brewers (82-51) are still winning way more often than they are losing.
With that in mind, the Brewers attention has to have shifted to making sure they finish with the best record in the National League and the top Seed going into the Playoffs.
The Milwaukee Brewers are 2 games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the Number 1 Seed in the National League and they will be playing this game on Thursday looking to secure a series win over the lowly New York Mets (60-73).
2026 will not be remembered with any fondness for the massively underachieving New York Mets who have only won more games than two teams in the National League. After the lavish spending, the Mets were expecting to challenge for a World Series, never mind a Playoff place, but they have not been able to get out of their own way all year.
New York had shown some life earlier this month, even if it was too late to challenge for a post-season spot, but they have now lost four of the last seven games. They will give the ball to Sean Manaea who has a 4-5 record and 4.31 in twenty-seven appearances this season with thirteen of those being starts.
In his first season in a Mets uniform, Sean Manaea made thirty-two starts, but has just twenty-five over the last two seasons. He had been the subject of trade rumours ahead of the deadline, but the veteran remains in New York and is contracted to play here next year.
Sean Manaea is making a fourteen start in a row for the Mets and has a 3-4 record and 3.89 ERA in the last thirteen. There had been a confidence in his throwing, but the Mets may be a little concerned that Manaea enters this game having allowed four runs in back to back starts, albeit without factoring into the decision either time and chewing through more than 12 Innings.
Last season, Sean Manaea lasted just 4 Innings when knocked around for four runs by the Milwaukee Brewers and he is making his first start against them since then.
The Brewers will counter by handing the ball to star pitcher Jacob Misiorowski who has a 13-5 record and 1.68 ERA in his twenty-four starts in the second year in the Major League. That ERA is a vast improvement on the number produced in his rookie season and Jacob Misiorowski is developing very quickly into one of the top pitchers across the League.
Jacob Misiorowski has a 2-1 record and 2.16 ERA in his four starts in August and he has given the Milwaukee Brewers every chance to win games by completing at least 6 Innings each time.
In his first start after the All Star Break last month, Jacob Misiorowski did not give up an earned run in 4 Innings thrown against the New York Mets, although he did not factor into the final decision. During his rookie season, Misiorowski allowed five runs without getting out of the 4th Inning in this ballpark and that was where he took his first Major League decision loss.
Milwaukee levelled up this series by winning on Wednesday, and they have won three of the five regular season games against the Mets. However, neither team has lost two in a row.
Prediction
Both starting pitchers have produced some decent outings of late, but Jacob Misiorowski has been more consistent than Sean Manaea.
The latter has also suffered a couple of tough starts with eight runs allowed in the last 12 Innings completed and Milwaukee may be able to back up their young pitcher to earn another victory.
If Misiorowski can contain the Mets like he did in July, the Milwaukee Brewers can pull away for a win by at least two runs.
The Pick :
New York Mets 2-6 Milwaukee Brewers
