This is a huge day for SV Elversberg. Just four years ago they were in the fourth tier in Germany, and now they are preparing for their first-ever Bundesliga match.
SV Elversberg finished runners-up in 2.Bundesliga last season to earn automatic promotion, and Vincent Wagner has largely kept the promotion-winning group together while adding young talent.
They also started the competitive season well, although the 3-1 DFB Cup win at MSV Duisburg was far from comfortable. Carles Martínez got his first competitive game as Bayer Leverkusen boss and came away with a 4-0 win at Wehen Wiesbaden. It was not quite as easy as the score suggests, with Bayer Leverkusen needing until the 43rd minute to break the deadlock, but Patrik Schick opened the scoring before Lucas Vázquez, Nathan Tella and Christian Kofane finished the job.
There is plenty of reason for optimism around the Werkself. Bayer Leverkusen won six of seven pre-season games and have brought in a new coach with a clear focus on intensity and attacking football.
They are also looking to improve on last season's sixth-place finish. Czech Patrick Schick remains the main goal threat, while Edmond Tapsoba has taken over as team captain this season.
The previous meetings make this fixture slightly more interesting. SV Elversberg famously beat Bayer Leverkusen 4-3 in the 2022 DFB Cup, but Bayer Leverkusen got their revenge with a 3-0 win in the next meeting in 2024. This will be their first Bundesliga meeting.
The Betting Verdict
Bayer Leverkusen are around 1.50-1.60 favorites, with SV Elversberg roughly 5.00 and the draw around 4.50. That seems about right and should show on the pitch.
Bayer Leverkusen have enough attacking quality to score two or three, while SV Elversberg should not be written off completely at home. Their cup win showed they can create chances, and this is a first Bundesliga home game they will want to enjoy rather than simply survive.
Bayer Leverkusen should still have too much quality in the end. SV Elversberg can make it uncomfortable for a while, but I expect the visitors to take control as the game goes on.
