Both of these teams will be looking to win out across the last three regular season games and hope that is enough to complete the ambitions they have left before the post-season begins.
Momentum is certainly with the Houston Rockets (50-29) who have won seven in a row and who will be confident of forcing their way into the top four of the Western Conference. They are currently the Number 5 Seed, but the Rockets have the same record as the Los Angeles Lakers, who are impacted greatly by injury, and so Houston will be filled with belief.
Ultimately it is the difference between hosting the Lakers in the First Round of the Playoffs or not and that remains important in the grand scheme of things as far as the Houston Rockets are concerned.
They are hosting the Philadelphia 76ers (43-36) who have lost two in a row and who are now 1 game behind the Toronto Raptors for a top six spot in the Eastern Conference. After this game, the 76ers have two very winnable contests, but the defeats to the Detroit Pistons and San Antonio Spurs have slowed momentum and Philadelphia may be destined to perform in the Play In Tournament.
Finishing in the top eight is still important and they are only 0.5 games ahead of the Charlotte Hornets in the current position- two chances to make the Playoffs is always going to be better than being in a 'must win' position twice and the 76ers will want some momentum to take into the Play In Tournament if that is where they will ultimately begin the post-season run.
One positive for the 76ers is that they are about as healthy as they can be right now, which is good timing for any long Playoff run.
The negative side to that is that the team are still building up a chemistry with one another as all of the top names take to the floor together and it may have contributed to the last couple of defeats.
On Thursday, the 76ers are going to have to find some efficient Offensive situations considering how well the Houston Rockets have played Defensively all season. This is where having a slight lack of cohesion can really sting and it has been particularly evident on the Defensive side of the court for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Those issues have not come up for the Houston Rockets having put this seven game winning run together and the team are averaging 51% from the field in recent outings. They have a solid balance shooting from inside and outside of the three point arc and the Rockets are going to believe they can challenge the 76ers on the glass.
There is plenty on the line for the 76ers on Thursday, but Houston do look a little better on both sides of the court right now and that can show up on the final scoreboard.
Philadelphia did beat Houston at home in January and the last three regular season games between these teams have all needed Overtime. They have been competitive and this one should be too, but Houston have the momentum that can carry them past Philadelphia and cover the line set.
