Preview
The 100% start to the season came to an end in disappointing fashion for Ulsan last weekend, but that has not stopped the layers from setting them up as a big favourite this Saturday. You can understand where they are coming from considering Ulsan are heading off to face a Gwangju side that are newly promoted and still chasing their first points of the 2020 season.
It is perhaps no surprise that the two promoted clubs from K League 2 are currently the bottom two in the 2020 K League, but Gwangju will be worried that the poor form to end last season has seeped into this one. They have lost all three games without scoring a goal, although Gwangju will be playing at home for the first time since the opening weekend when going down to a 0-2 defeat to Seongnam.
Those losses have been added to the defeats to end last season which means Gwangju have been beaten in 5 in a row in all competitions. They have shown some stubbornness in their last 2 losses at Seoul and Sangju Sangmu, but those two clubs are perhaps not at the same level as an Ulsan team that should have won the title in 2019.
Gwangju had been unbeaten in 20 games at home in all competitions and they had won 5 in a row before losing 1-2 to Jeonnam Dragons in their last home game last season. They have followed that with a second consecutive home defeat for the first time since April 2018.
At least some encouragement could be taken from the fact that Ulsan dropped two points in a home draw with Busan I'Park last week, the team that came up behind Gwangju last season. The main rivals to Jeonbuk Motors for the South Korean title were also 2-0 down in their last away game at Suwon Bluewings before recovering for a 2-3 win, although Ulsan have still lost some ground on the defending Champions at the top of the early standings.
Ulsan are unbeaten in 4 games in all competitions, but a different look shows a club that have won 2 of their last 6 which is a slight concern. Playing away from home hasn't been a real issue for Ulsan in recent months as they have won 4 of their last 5 on their travels including the last 3 in a row.
Gwangju do not have a very good home record against Ulsan, but they have snapped a 5 game losing run to them here by drawing the last 2 by the same 1-1 scoreline.
Prediction
The odds are not the most appealing for the Ulsan win in a League where many short price favourites can be unstuck.
They should be too good for Gwangju though who have struggled at this level and have yet to score a goal. It means a single strike from Ulsan may be enough and this is a club who have scored in 16 games in succession in all competitions.
Ulsan have also managed to win 4 of their last 5 away games in all competitions and should have enough to inflict a third straight home defeat for the newly promoted strugglers.
The Pick :
Gwangju 0-2 Ulsan
