Paris Saint-Germain
Winning a Champions League Group does present the best path through the opening Knock Out Rounds of the tournament and so there is pressure on Paris Saint-Germain after dropping two points on Match Day 1. For the second season in a row they have been placed in a tough looking section, but it would be a huge upset if Paris Saint-Germain are not able to at least finish in the top two in the Group.
The 1-1 draw at Club Brugge is not the kind of start Paris Saint-Germain would have expected in the Champions League, but they will be looking for revenge over Manchester City on Tuesday having been beaten by this club in the Semi Final last season. However, Paris Saint-Germain have not won any of their last 4 Champions League games overall, while they have failed to win any of their last 3 at the Parc des Princes. Even more concerning is the fact that Paris Saint-Germain have lost back to back Champions League games here.
Paris Saint-Germain lost the French Super Cup, but they are unbeaten in 9 games in all competitions and they have won 8 of those as they have taken command of the French top flight. They have won 6 games in a row at home in all competitions.
Angel Di Maria is suspended and Mauricio Pochettino will be without the likes of Sergio Ramos and Marco Verratti this week. Lionel Messi is a major doubt for the home team.
Manchester City
A big week has gotten off to a perfect start for Manchester City after beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but they have two more big away games to come before the October international break. The middle of those games in the Champions League is perhaps the least important of the three to be played this week, but Pep Guardiola will want his Manchester City team to lay down a marker to their main rivals both at home and in Europe.
Falling short in the Champions League last season will have hurt the squad, but Manchester City have thumped Leipzig 6-3 on Match Day 1 of the Group Stage and will be looking to take command of this section with a win in the French capital. They have won 12 of their last 14 Champions League games overall, and Manchester City have won 6 of their last 7 away ties in this competition.
Manchester City are unbeaten in 7 games in all competitions and the victory over Chelsea means they have won 6 of those games to build confidence. They have won 21 of their last 23 away games in all competitions, although both exceptions have been defeats at Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur.
Oleksandr Zinchenko and Ilkay Gundogan are doubts, while Manchester City will likely rotate their squad. John Stones may be given a start as he returns to fitness.
Head to Head
Last season Manchester City beat Paris Saint-Germain at home and away in the Champions League Semi Final.
They are unbeaten in all 5 previous matches between these clubs.
Paris Saint-Germain have hosted Manchester City twice and they have drawn 2-2 before the 1-2 defeat here a few months ago.
Prediction
This is a huge Champions League game, but the feeling is that both Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City will be good enough to reach the Group Stage regardless of results against one another.
There is slightly more pressure on Paris Saint-Germain who drew 1-1 at Club Brugge on Match Day 1 on the same night that Manchester City thumped Leipzig. Another setback would put Paris Saint-Germain in a difficult spot before the double header with Leipzig, but I don't think there will be a lot of panic.
However, there is revenge on the mind of the home team and they will be wanting to show Manchester City that they are more likely to compete with them this season. Paris Saint-Germain were beaten twice by Manchester City in the Champions League Semi Final by Manchester City and they have failed to win 3 home Champions League games, the last two both ending in defeats.
Manchester United have won twice here in recent seasons too and Manchester City are off a confidence boosting win at Chelsea.
I expect the visitors to cause problems, but Paris Saint-Germain were a little unfortunate to lose the home Leg against Manchester City last season when looking at the underlying numbers. Paris Saint-Germain created some good chances and were wasteful in front of goal, but they have been playing well enough domestically to believe they can avoid a defeat here against a Manchester City team that have only scored 2 goals in 3 away Premier League games this season.
Manchester City don't concede a lot of goals, but Paris Saint-Germain look an underdog to get behind at home.
