Liverpool
In the immediate aftermath of the Merseyside derby there would have been disappointment as the overriding emotion, but the cold light of day may have everyone associated with Liverpool feeling quite differently. Two points might have slipped away deep into injury time, but Liverpool have extended their lead over injury hit Arsenal at the top of the Premier League and another game has been crossed off the list.
The Reds are 7 points clear of Arsenal with fourteen Premier League games to play and that includes hosting their main title rivals later in the season. With all that in mind, Liverpool remain in a very strong position when it comes to winning a second English title since 1990 and they will be looking to get back on track at Anfield where they have a 8-2-1 record in the top flight.
Liverpool have won 2 of their last 5 games in all competitions and that includes being dumped out of the FA Cup at Home Park last weekend. The recent poor results have been in matches played away from Anfield and Liverpool have won 4 in a row in front of their own fans.
Joe Gomez is injured and Curtis Jones is suspended. Trent Alexander-Arnold could be ready to return to the first eleven, while manager Arne Slot may choose to rotate some players with the big game at Villa Park coming up.
Wolves
Vitor Pereira picked a strong team in the FA Cup Fourth Round last weekend in a bid to help his Wolves squad build up their confidence and they were 0-2 winners at Blackburn Rovers. That victory follows an important one in the Premier League and Wolves have once again moved out of the bottom three.
Beating Aston Villa earlier this month has pulled Wolves out into 17th place in the Premier League table and they are 2 points clear of Leicester City and 3 points clear of Ipswich Town, although both of those relegation rivals play on Saturday. The side have a 2-3-7 away record in the top flight where Wolves have scored 18 goals and conceded 28.
Wolves have won a couple of FA Cup ties to move through to the Fifth Round, but they had lost 4 Premier League games in succession before getting the better of Midlands rivals Aston Villa. Both FA Cup wins have been produced away from Molineux, but Wolves have conceded three goals in each of their last 2 away Premier League games and lost both at Newcastle United and Chelsea.
Hee-Chan Hwang is a doubt, while both Boubacar Traore and Jorgen Strand Larsen are hoping to be available to join the squad.
Head to Head
Liverpool won a competitive fixture 1-2 at Molineux in September.
The Reds have won 7 home League games in a row against Wolves.
Prediction
The progress in the League Cup and the rearranged Merseyside derby that was originally supposed to be played in December has just forced Liverpool through a difficult period.
Another Premier League fixture has been brought forward from next month into this one and Liverpool are being forced to play every three days until early March when the weekend has been cleared after the exit from the FA Cup.
Arne Slot is not going to be on the sidelines having been one of four people sent off after the final whistle had been blown in the Merseyside derby.
Despite the late goal conceded, Liverpool have a healthy lead in the Premier League and the Dutchman has to believe that his players can bounce back effectively even without him urging them from the dugout.
Liverpool have suffered some tough away results in recent weeks, but they have been playing well at Anfield and the manager will want his team to make a fast start when facing Wolves on Sunday. The Reds have won 4 in a row at home in all competitions and they have forced their way in front in the first half, which has just allowed the manager to keep the team as fresh as possible.
They are facing a Wolves team that have won consecutive games, but Vitor Pereira's men are just dealing with one or two injuries right now. Those wins over Aston Villa and Blackburn Rovers will have given Wolves some confidence and they will want to take advantage of the fact that Liverpool had an incredibly tough match to play this past Wednesday, but it also cannot be ignored that the visiting team have lost consecutive away League games.
Defeats at Newcastle United and Chelsea have been down to poor defensive performances, although Wolves will be encouraged by some of the attacking football they have produced. They did not score at St James' Park, but Wolves created some big chances there and did the same at Chelsea.
Attack may end up being the best form of defence for Wolves, although containing Liverpool looks beyond them.
That does not mean Wolves cannot play a part here though and backing Liverpool to win a game in which both teams score looks a decent enough price in a fixture where the layers are on top of most markets. The home team have only had 2 clean sheets in 7 home games in all competitions, while Liverpool have conceded in 4 Premier League games in a row at Anfield.
Ultimately Liverpool should still have enough about them to win this game, but Wolves can play a part at a big enough price.
