It’s been a tough baptism of fire for Wrexham upon their long-awaited return to the English second tier as the Welsh club have lost both of their opening two league matches in the Championship, leaving Phil Parkinson’s side sitting in 19th place and pointless so far.
Early defeats at the hands of Southampton 2-1 away from home on the opening day of the season and last weekend’s 3-2 loss at home to West Brom sees Wrexham heading into Saturday afternoon’s game against crisis club Sheffield Wednesday looking to avoid a third league defeat on the trot.
In-between the two early losses in the Championship, Wrexham did manage to navigate their way through to the 2nd round of the League Cup against Championship counterparts Hull City but only just as the victory came in a penalty shoot-out.
Sheffield Wednesday however find themselves in a worse predicament as struggles on and off the pitch have dominated the headlines recently with the club failing to pay the players while defeats on the pitch to Leicester City and Stoke City have done little to boost morale within the club.
The Owls also progressed through to the next round of the domestic League Cup but this was also thanks to prevailing over Bolton Wanderers in a penalty shoot-out and the Yorkshire club’s previous competitive win within 90 minutes was back in April of last season when they registered a 2-1 home win against Middlesbrough.
Last season’s mid-table finish of 12th place now seems a very long time ago now and Henrik Pedersen’s side look to have their work cut out at the Racecourse Ground on Saturday afternoon.
The Betting Verdict
Wrexham won the previous meeting against Sheffield Wednesday 4-1 away from home in a League Cup tie back in 2006 but although a lot of water has passed under the proverbial bridge, the Welsh hosts should just about get over the line here.
