Group A of the World Cup qualifiers kicks off on Thursday night and features this upcoming clash between a slowly improving Luxembourg and visitors Northern Ireland when the two nations face off at the Stade de Luxembourg in this opening game of the group stage.
Luxembourg finished bottom of the League C Group 3 table in the Nations League towards the end of last year but although the hosts failed to win a single game within their six group games, Luc Holtz’s side did pick up three points in the process.

Northern Ireland were in the same group as Luxembourg in the previous Nations League campaign and the visitors finished top of C/Group 3 by a two-point margin over runners-up Bulgaria meaning Northern Ireland will find themselves in League B next time around.
However, Northern Ireland have tended to struggle on the road in World Cup qualifiers as they have slipped to four losses in their last six away ties and have managed to capture just one win in the process.
That rare highlight came in the form of a 4-1 win away at Lithuania but losses to the likes of Norway, Italy, Switzerland and Bulgaria suggest this could be a tricky opening group game for the Irish.
