Sunderland

Fans have to be pinching themselves after witnessing the start Sunderland have made to their return to the Premier League- they rounded out the first three months with another stunning victory, this time at Stamford Bridge. Regis Le Bris and the squad will understand there is still some significant hard work to get through if Sunderland are to retain Premier League status, but everything is pointing towards this team being very comfortable at this level.

A poor ending to last season meant Sunderland were seen as underdogs in the Championship Play Offs, but they have bolstered the squad with real quality and experience after Promotion. This has helped The Black Cats and they are 4th in the Premier League table and have now moved onto 17 points for the campaign, which is a huge boost. Home form has been very impressive and Sunderland have a 3-1-0 record at the Stadium of Light where they have scored 8 goals and conceded 2.

Sunderland would have impressed by simply putting an unbeaten run together, but they deserve so much more credit for producing 3 wins in the last 4 League games played. The most impressive part of that run is that 3 of the fixtures in that time have been played away from the Stadium of Light. Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw here by Aston Villa, but battled for that point with ten men and have beaten Wolves in front of the home fans most recently.

Omar Alderete has been hugely influential for Sunderland, but is a doubt as he continues to move through the concussion protocol.

Everton

They huffed and puffed and probably deserved a lot more than they got in the 0-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur last time out, but David Moyes will have been incredibly disappointed with the set piece goals allowed. That is something that he will have been working on over the last several days and Moyes will also want to see a bit more consistency from his Everton team in the final third.

It is a tight and competitive Premier League table, especially in the middle of the Division, and Everton are 14th in the standings, but with 11 points secured this season. A couple of wins would see them make big strides up the table, but consecutive defeats have dropped Everton into their current position. The Toffees head to this part of the North East with a 1-0-3 away record.

Everton have failed to score in losing to Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur and they have won 1 of the last 7 games played in all competitions. Recent away form has been concerning and Everton have lost their last 3 games played on their travels since beating bottom club Wolves at Molineux.

Nathan Patterson and Jarrad Branthwaite are both set to miss out.

Head to Head

Everton beat Sunderland 3-0 at home in the League Cup when the teams last met in September 2017.

The last fixture hosted by Sunderland was played twelve months earlier as they were beaten 0-3 by Everton in the Premier League.

Sunderland had lost 1 of 7 home League fixtures against Everton before that thumping defeat in September 2016.

Prediction

Over the next several weeks, there are a number of Monday Night Football fixtures picked by the broadcasters, but the majority will be featuring Manchester United.

It is the unfortunate Everton fans who have to make a long journey for a late kick off this week and they will also be travelling to Manchester to face United later this month.

The fixture is also likely to be a tough one for those supporters with Everton having lost a couple of fixtures in succession and now having to face a confident Sunderland team who came from behind to deservingly beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last time out.

David Moyes will not have been happy with the defensive performance in the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur and being undone by set pieces will have rocked the manager to the core. He will be working on being more solid and Everton will need to be if they are going to contain a Sunderland team that will create opportunities from the set pieces they can generate.

Everton have just hit a quiet poor patch of form- 1 win in 7 games in all competitions is disappointing, while they have lost 3 away games in a row. This is a team that have looked pretty neat and tidy in the middle third, but Everton are not showing enough quality in the final third and not defending well enough in their own third, which is adding up to poor results.

Now they have to deal with a Sunderland team that have yet to lose a home game this season and who will feel a little disrespected by being set as the 'underdog' in this one.

Regis Le Bris has really got this squad playing as he would have hoped and his team have shown clinical form in the final third. That may be unsustainable through the course of the next few months, but Sunderland are confident and can use the passion of the home crowd to maintain the unbeaten record at the Stadium of Light.

Defensively Sunderland have impressed and they have a goalkeeper who has stepped up when needed.

It does feel like a draw is a real player in this one, but Sunderland may feel they can get more if they are to score the first goal.

Where the newly promoted club have really impressed is the ability to fight back and earn points and they have recovered to produce positive results against both Brentford and Aston Villa here this season.

Being able to back Sunderland with a narrow start on the Asian Handicap at reasonable odds looks a little more effective than backing the points to be shared and that is largely down to Everton's away record this season. The Toffees will pose a threat, but Sunderland have shown they can deal with plenty thrown at them and The Black Cats can keep the points ticking over towards safety.
