Bournemouth
They were minutes away from securing a positive result at the home of the Champions on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, and all credit has to be given to Andoni Iraola for the early Bournemouth performances. After losing the majority of the backline, some wondered if Bournemouth would need some time to find some rhythm, but that has been far from the case.
Instead of taking time, Bournemouth have been flying outside of the early League Cup exit, and The Cherries beat Brighton last weekend to move up into 4th place in the Premier League table. They have secured 9 points from the opening fixtures and Bournemouth have a 2-0-0 record at the Vitality Stadium where they have scored 3 goals and conceded 1.
Bournemouth were Knocked Out of the League Cup in a home defeat to Brentford, but they have won 3 straight Premier League games and conceded a single goal in that run. The League wins earned at the Vitality Stadium this season means Bournemouth have won 3 straight Premier League games in front of the home fans.
Adam Smith is hoping to return before the end of the month, but this game is expected to be too soon. Both Ryan Christie and Bafode Diakite will be hoping to be passed fit through the week ahead of this game.
Newcastle United
Excitement around the return to the Champions League will not have been weakened after the 1-2 home defeat to Barcelona on Thursday, but the result will have reminded the Newcastle United fans about the gap that still needs to be bridged to the elite teams both at home and abroad. Eddie Howe will be pleased with much of what he saw, but Newcastle United struggled after falling behind and the departure of Alexander Isak is likely to be a talking point for a while.
Two seasons ago, Newcastle United did struggle to deal with the European and domestic commitments in the early part of the campaign and this time they are facing eight Champions League games through to the end of January. The focus has to move back to the Premier League this weekend where Newcastle United sit in 10th place and with a 0-2-0 away record.
Newcastle United were able to win for the first time in the Premier League last weekend and they do have 3 clean sheets in 4 games domestically, although the lack of goals has been a concern. Both away League games have ended goalless at Aston Villa and Leeds United and that means Newcastle United have won none of their last 5 away Premier League fixtures.
Jacob Ramsey and Yoane Wissa may have to wait until after the October international break to return to the squad. Fabian Schar is a doubt and Anthony Gordon has to complete a domestic suspension.
Head to Head
Bournemouth took four points from the two League meetings against Newcastle United last season and they have extended their unbeaten record to 6 in top flight contests.
The game at the Vitality Stadium ended 1-1, and 2 of the last 3 here have ended in draws with the middle fixture being a Bournemouth win.
Prediction
If they had just been able to hold for a few more minutes and earned a deserved positive result at Anfield, Bournemouth may have been heading into this weekend unbeaten in the top flight.
Andoni Iraola's reputation is only being improved all of the time after leading his team to three League wins in a row since that opening weekend defeat to the Champions.
Bournemouth have impressed in the main- the defensive reconstruction has looked very solid and the team continue to get forward and cause a lot of problems. They have 9 points on the board, but that looks all the more impressive when you think Bournemouth have played both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur away from home.
Consecutive wins at the Vitality Stadium will only have boosted the confidence of this side and having a week to prepare may give them the edge over a Newcastle United team that was playing on Thursday.
It was a tough match for The Magpies against Barcelona, a team many consider favourites to win the Champions League, and the legs will be weary.
Anthony Gordon continues to be a big miss for a team that are perhaps struggling in the final third without him as they bed in new faces and Newcastle United may just be a little fatigued during this fixture.
The fact they have not won any of the last 6 fixtures against Bournemouth won't help, while this is a long journey to make to the South Coast for a relatively early kick off.
All of this could add up and Bournemouth look worth backing on the Asian Handicap where the stake is returned in the event of a draw.
