Leeds United
The lack of goals early this season will have been a concern for Leeds United fans and especially when you think of some of the things Daniel Farke feels was missing in the summer transfer window. Credit has to be given to the team for showing some resilience at the back though and Leeds United bared their own teeth in the final third when crushing Wolves last weekend at Molineux.
Almost every Leeds United fan would have signed up for 7 points from the opening five Premier League games and they are sitting just a place behind old rivals Manchester United in the standings. Home form will remain important for Leeds United with the passionate support the team receive at Elland Road and they are 1-1-0 here so far in the top flight.
Leeds United beat Everton on the opening weekend, but had not won any of 4 games in all competitions following that and scored just a single goal in the eventual Penalty Shoot Out defeat at rivals Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup Second Round. The body blow of conceding an injury time winner at Fulham did not linger though and Leeds United enter this fixture after a comprehensive 1-3 win at Wolves last Saturday.
Lucas Perri is hoping to return this weekend and retake the goalkeeping gloves from Karl Darlow, while Jayden Bogle, Dan James and Wilfried Gnonto are also all hoping to be involved.
Bournemouth
It may not have been the most exciting game of football that neutrals will see this season, but Bournemouth have continued to tick the points over and that will be a positive as far as manager Andoni Iraola is concerned. His team were probably the better in the goalless draw with Newcastle United, but Iraola will want to see a bit more quality in the final third.
The Cherries are 4th in the Premier League table and they are the closest team in terms of points to leaders Liverpool along with Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur. They make a long journey to Yorkshire with a 1-0-1 record away from home where Bournemouth have scored 3 goals and conceded 4.
Bournemouth were beaten 0-2 at home by Brentford in the League Cup Second Round, but they are unbeaten in 4 Premier League games since the late defeat at Liverpool in the opening match of the new season. That defeat at Anfield meant Bournemouth had won 1 of their last 7 away Premier League games, but they secured another victory on their travels when beating Tottenham Hotspur 0-1 last month.
Lewis Cook is close to a return, but this weekend may come too soon. Both Adam Smith and Enes Unal are hopeful of returning after the October international break, although the latter has been a long-term injury and may need more time to rebuild fitness.
Head to Head
Three seasons ago Bournemouth and Leeds United met in the Premier League and there were 12 goals scored in the two League fixtures played.
Both of those matches ended in home wins where the host scored four goals, including the 4-3 victory Leeds United had at Elland Road.
Leeds United have hosted Bournemouth 8 times- they have won all of those matches played.
Prediction
The last few years has seen the numbers of goals explode in the Premier League, but there looks to be more of a resilience and physicality to top flight teams this season.
It is a small sample and so remains something to monitor, but that plays a part in the thinking for this fixture on Saturday afternoon.
Take away Bournemouth's two goals scored at Anfield on the opening weekend and this is a team that has produced four goals in 4 Premier League games. However, at the same time Bournemouth have conceded just once since the four goals given up to the Champions.
The hosts, Leeds United, managed three goals in beating struggling Wolves last weekend, but had previously failed to score in 3 Premier League fixtures. They had needed a Penalty to beat Everton 1-0 before that run of failing to trouble the scoreboard, while Leeds United have conceded just two goals when disregarding the 5-0 defeat at Arsenal.
Daniel Farke and the board have made it a real point to bring in physically tough players to compete at this Premier League level and there is every chance that this is going to develop into a tight, competitive fixture.
Even the underlying numbers are backing the performances- Bournemouth have not created a lot of chances in the last couple of games, but this is not a team allowing too many quality chances to be made against them.
Leeds United have also struggled to create big chances, but they have been pretty sound defensively, especially in home games, and this fixture may be much different to when the clubs met three seasons ago.
Picking a winner is tough and Bournemouth are perhaps a touch short at the prices of being an away favourite.
The first goal feels like it could be a huge factor in the outcome of this fixture, especially with some of the attacking issues both teams have displayed. With the defences playing at their current level, one goal is something both Leeds United and Bournemouth will feel they can protect and the odds against quotes for one, or both, of these teams failing to find the net are appealing enough here.
Of course an early goal changes the entire game state and the way the fixture is played, but there has been enough shown by both teams to believe the defences could be on top at both ends of the pitch.
