Brentford
After taking advantage of some poor defending and scoring the opening goal at Craven Cottage, Brentford were unable to build on the lead and they were well beaten when all was said and done. Keith Andrews was far from pleased with what he saw from his team and the manager will be demanding a big reaction when Brentford kick off the Premier League weekend back at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The defeat leaves Brentford in 17th place in the early Premier League standings with 4 points earned and all of those have been from matches played in front of the home fans. The Bees have a 1-1-0 record at the Gtech Community Stadium in the Premier League and have scored 3 goals and conceded 2 in those matches.
Brentford have progressed through to the League Cup Fourth Round after overcoming Premier League opposition in Bournemouth and Aston Villa, but they did need Penalties in the latter of those ties. They had drawn 1-1 with Aston Villa in that Third Round tie before the Penalty Shoot Out success, but that also means Brentford have won 1 of their last 4 home games in all competitions in normal time.
The squad that made the short journey to Craven Cottage should be available for selection.
Manchester United
An early exit in the League Cup and no European Football means Manchester United have plenty of time to prepare for a single fixture per week through to the end of November. Ruben Amorim will be hoping that time can see some consistency produced by his team and the 2-1 win over Chelsea last weekend does give Manchester United a chance to do that with games against Brentford and Sunderland to come before the October international break.
Three precious points might only have improved the Premier League position to 11th, but Manchester United are very much in touch with the top four places and that remains the target at this stage of the season. Improving the away form will be important as Manchester United travel to this part of West London with a 0-1-1 record away from home in the top flight.
Manchester United's win over Chelsea means they have won consecutive home Premier League games for the first time under Ruben Amorim with the last occasion being in early December 2024. They have lost 1 of their last 5 games in all competitions, although that was Manchester United's last away Premier League game at Manchester City two weeks ago.
Diogo Dalot is back in training and should travel with the squad, but Casemiro will serve a one game suspension. Lisandro Martinez could be making his way back into action by the end of next month if his long-term recovery continues as planned.
Head to Head
Both Brentford and Manchester United beat the other at home in the Premier League last season.
Brentford were 4-3 winners here in May and they are unbeaten in 3 home games against Manchester United and 2 of those have been in victories.
Prediction
The early Premier League game is going to make for fascinating viewing and there is some pressure on Brentford and Manchester United ahead of this fixture.
Beating Chelsea last weekend is a huge boost for Ruben Amorim and his men, but Manchester United are still a team that can look extremely vulnerable. There have been moments of real quality, but we have yet to see Manchester United put a complete 90 minutes together and that will always offer up opportunities for opponents.
It was the case in the win last Saturday- Manchester United were clearly the better team in the first half, albeit against ten men, but lost their way in the second and allowed Chelsea to build up some momentum.
The same can be said in the 1-1 draw at Fulham earlier this season when Manchester United had the better of the first 60 minutes before allowing the hosts to fight back.
There will be moments when Manchester United will have to weather the Brentford pressure and that could decide the outcome of the game.
Keith Andrews has not been very happy with some of the away performances, but Brentford have been better at the Gtech Community Stadium. They earned a deserved point against Chelsea, even if the equaliser came deep into injury time, while Brentford did enough to beat Aston Villa here in the Premier League last month.
The home record against Manchester United will give the hosts plenty of encouragement, but there are still some issues that need to be addressed, especially in defensive areas.
Set pieces will likely cause Manchester United problems with the goalkeepers continuing to struggle under the pressure of crosses, and that may offer Brentford their best route to goal. However, there has been plenty to like from Manchester United going forward and with Matheus Cunha back and likely ready to start, you have to give the away team a narrow edge.
At odds against, Manchester United are just about worthy of backing here, while those searching bigger prices may look at someone like Kristoffer Ajer having a shot (2.50 prices) with the threat he poses from set pieces.
