Football: English Premier League
Saturday 25th October 2025 - Kick Off 3pm
Chelsea
A whole host of injuries could not stem the Chelsea tide in the Champions League on Wednesday night and three teenagers got themselves on the scoresheet in the 5-1 victory over Ajax. The expectation is that Enzo Maresca will have a more experienced team ready to start this Premier League fixture, but the squad looks capable at Stamford Bridge and there are plenty of games on deck which will give everyone an opportunity to contribute.
The October international break has not slowed the Chelsea momentum and the team will begin this weekend in 5th place in the Premier League table and 5 points behind leaders Arsenal. Right now you have to believe the ambition is making sure Chelsea return to the Champions League next season, but that could change if the winning run grows. The Blues have a 2-1-1 record at Stamford Bridge in the top flight as they prepare to host this fixture.
Chelsea have won 5 of their last 6 games in all competitions and have bounced back from a disappointing defeat against Brighton to win 4 in a row overall. The majority of those wins have been at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea are looking for a fourth straight success in front of the home fans, while they have scored 8 goals in the last 3 victories here.
Joao Pedro served his European suspension during the week and is set to return, but Malo Gusto is serving a domestic ban. Liam Delap could be back in the squad before the November international break, but not this weekend, and the likes of Reece James, Marc Cucurella and Pedro Neto will be expecting to return to action.
Sunderland
We are still in October so this is not the time to be getting carried away, but Sunderland have surpassed all early expectations that had been placed on this team. Regis Le Bris has been able to integrate his new signings within his system and the 2-0 home win over Wolves has maintained the positive vibes around the Stadium of Light.
Odds on favourites for Relegation at the start of the season, Sunderland are making a mockery of the prices as they sit in 7th place in the Premier League table and 9 points clear of the bottom three. Only the most optimistic of fans will be thinking about European Football, while others will be hoping this is a campaign when Sunderland can finish above rivals Newcastle United, but the main goal remains survival. The Black Cats have a 1-1-2 record away from home where they have scored just a single goal so far this season.
Sunderland have lost 1 of their last 6 games in the Premier League and that has kept the points ticking over, which will also build confidence. That sole defeat was the outcome from the last away League game played at Manchester United when Sunderland were beaten 2-0, but they had won at the City Ground prior to that defeat.
Reinildo is back from a suspension, but the squad is otherwise unchanged.
Head to Head
Chelsea completed the Premier League double over Sunderland when the clubs last met in the 2016/17 season.
They have won 3 in a row when hosting at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea have scored at least three goals in each victory.
Prediction
You cannot have nothing but respect for the early season form produced by Sunderland and they are already a third way towards the points total they will have targeted prior to the season kicking off.
Most still see 40 points as the benchmark for survival and Sunderland have picked up 14 points, including a very important win over Wolves last weekend.
In saying that, the majority of the points have been earned at the Stadium of Light and the challenge for Regis Le Bris and his team is to find a way to be a bit more competitive on their travels.
It is perhaps a harsh assessment, but Sunderland have been second best in all 4 away Premier League games played this season and needed wasteful finishing from Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest to earn positive results there. The team have shown they have real composure in the final third by making the best of the chances being created, but that has not been the case away from home with just a single goal scored.
They could have easily been beaten at Selhurst Park and the City Ground, while Sunderland did not really compete very well against Manchester United in a 2-0 away defeat earlier this month.
Now they are facing a confident Chelsea team who will have some key players well rested for this latest Premier League fixture.
Enzo Maresca is guiding a young squad so there are moments when the inexperience will show, but a solid midfield base with the likes of Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro further forward gives the home team the edge.
Chelsea have won 3 straight games at Stamford Bridge and the likelihood is that they will have enough firepower to make that four in a row.
And while credit has to be given to Sunderland for the way they have performed through the first three months of the season, it should be noted that both away defeats have come by the same 2-0 scoreline and that looks a real player again this weekend.
