Tottenham Hotspur
The squad may look a little deeper than last season, especially on paper, but it does feel like Thomas Frank is reducing the number of players that he will believe he can 'trust' when it comes to big games that Tottenham Hotspur have coming up. The 2-0 defeat at St James' Park in the League Cup Fourth Round will mean opportunities for the fringe players are perhaps limited in the weeks ahead, but even the 'first team' have something to prove.
A big win at Everton last Sunday will have given Tottenham Hotspur confidence as they moved back up into 3rd place in the Premier League table and 5 points behind leaders, and rivals, Arsenal. It was yet another positive away display in the top flight, but Tottenham Hotspur have a poor 1-1-2 record here in the Premier League and that has been holding them back.
Tottenham Hotspur have won 1 of their last 4 games in all competitions since the October international break and they have suffered a couple of losses in that time. The side had beaten Villarreal and Doncaster Rovers in home Cup games, but Tottenham Hotspur fell to a 1-2 defeat here in the Premier League against Aston Villa and have not won any of the last 3 home League fixtures played.
There are a host of injuries in the home squad, but Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie are closest to returns. The options could be bolstered before the November international break with the likes of Archie Gray and Dominic Solanke getting a little closer.
Chelsea
Winning the Premier League with this young squad is perhaps unlikely this season, but Chelsea have shown they have an appetite for Cup competitions and progressed to the League Cup Quarter Final. The draw has been kind for Enzo Maresca's men, but they will be looking to bounce back in the Premier League after a really disappointing home defeat to Sunderland last Saturday.
It is a loss that has dropped Chelsea into 9th place in the Premier League table, although they have far from lost touch with the Champions League places and that remains the target in the standings. The Blues have a 2-1-1 away record in the top flight where they have scored 11 goals and conceded 5.
Chelsea may have suffered a setback in the 1-2 home loss to Sunderland, but they beat Wolves at Molineux in the League Cup during the week and have won 5 of the last 6 games played in all competitions. They have perhaps been able to play with a bit more freedom away from home and Chelsea have won 3 fixtures in succession on their travels, albeit twice in Cup settings.
Malo Gusto is available having served a domestic suspension, but manager Enzo Maresca was far from happy with Liam Delap earning two yellow cards in quick succession on Wednesday. The striker has only just returned from an injury, but will miss this fixture.
Head to Head
Chelsea completed the Premier League double over Tottenham Hotspur last season for the second year in a row.
They scored four times in winning 3-4 at Spurs and Chelsea have managed to score eight goals in their last two visits.
Tottenham Hotspur have beaten Chelsea once in their new home.
However, they have lost 6 of 8 games hosting this London rival.
Prediction
The last two visits to Tottenham Hotspur have ended with Chelsea scoring four goals, but Thomas Frank's team are much more secure defensively compared with Ange Postecoglou's.
It should mean a much tougher fixture and it is pretty difficult to separate these teams, even if Chelsea have enjoyed playing in Tottenham Hotspur's new home with 6 wins in 8 games here.
However, The Blues have not really been in the most convincing of form and the loss to Sunderland last weekend underlines the point. Chelsea have won 3 away games in a row in all competitions, but another Ange Postecoglou managed team, Nottingham Forest, had The Blues under immense pressure before capitulating in the second half.
Enzo Maresca knows his role as manager is only secure if the results keep coming, but he has to acknowledge that Chelsea have to be stronger. Defensively they give up big chances and there is an inconsistency about them in the final third, although talented players will create opportunities.
Cole Palmer's absence has not been felt as much as perhaps some people believed it would, but Chelsea still have to prove themselves in big matches.
The same can be said for Tottenham Hotspur who have certainly been earning better results than the performances may have warranted.
They have been stronger away from home too and Tottenham Hotspur's defeat to Aston Villa in the last Premier League game here has prolonged the poor League form. A Champions League win over Villarreal was unconvincing and Tottenham Hotspur have not really been able to find a consistent formula in the final third outside of the set pieces that they used to exploit Everton last week.
Set pieces are likely to be important again, especially considering what has been shown by Chelsea with an erratic goalkeeper and an unsure centre back partnership. That will make Tottenham Hotspur dangerous, but the lack of home goals has to be a worry against this Chelsea team who have scored 11 away League goals.
In saying that, Chelsea have not been creating a lot of high quality chances and will also be looking to use set pieces to open up what has been a pretty decent Tottenham Hotspur shape. Thomas Frank's work is clearly getting through to the players with the way Spurs handled Everton's set piece approach and this has the makings of a tight, competitive fixture.
The draw is a real player in this one, but there is also a feeling that a single goal could separate the teams.
Goals have been hard to come by in matches played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season and only two special strikes helped Aston Villa breach the defences twice. Chelsea have players capable of doing the same, but the under 2.5 goal market being priced at odds against looks too big here.
