Derby County will be aiming to continue their recent resurgence in the Championship when they welcome in-form Hull City to Pride Park on Wednesday night. After a slow start to the season, the Rams have finally found their rhythm under John Eustace and are beginning to climb the league standings.
Eustace endured a frustrating opening to his first full campaign in charge, collecting just one win from Derby’s first ten league matches (D5, L4). However, a change in fortunes over the past fortnight has seen his side string together three consecutive victories, with back-to-back 1-0 home wins against Norwich City and Queens Park Rangers followed by an impressive 3-1 triumph away at Sheffield United last weekend.
Carlton Morris produced a superb display at Bramall Lane, netting his first senior hat-trick to secure Derby’s second away success of the season. That result lifted the Rams to 17th in the table on 17 points from 13 matches — eight clear of the relegation zone and just five behind the playoff places.
Encouragingly, Derby have also enjoyed recent success against Hull, winning four of the last five meetings between the sides, including a narrow 1-0 victory in April’s reverse fixture.
Hull City, however, arrive at Pride Park in excellent form and brimming with confidence. Sergej Jakirović’s side are unbeaten in their last six league outings (W4 D2) and have surged up the table into seventh place, level on points with sixth-placed West Brom and only three behind Middlesbrough in second.
The Tigers’ unbeaten streak began with a draw against Preston North End before they claimed successive wins over Sheffield United, Birmingham City and Leicester City. Following a 1-1 draw with Charlton Athletic, Hull returned to winning ways at the weekend with a convincing 2-0 victory away to Norwich, courtesy of goals from Joe Gelhardt and Darko Gyabi.
While Hull possess one of the weaker defensive records among the top-half clubs, their attacking power has been outstanding, with 22 goals in 13 games making them the Championship’s second-highest scorers behind leaders Coventry City.
The Betting Verdict
Derby’s confidence is growing, but Hull’s unbeaten run and attacking form make them difficult opponents.
