Fulham
When the television camera panned to Marco Silva after Manchester City had just moved 1-5 ahead at Craven Cottage, the manager looked down in the dumps. However, by the end of the ninety minutes, Silva was out of seat and pushing his Fulham team forward as they came so very close to levelling the League game at 5-5.
They return to action this weekend in the second of the Premier League games scheduled for Sunday and it is clearly going to be a fixture in which Fulham will be desperate to avoid falling into another deep hole, as they did on Tuesday. The side do have a 4-1-2 record at Craven Cottage and that has been key to keeping Fulham out of the bottom three in the Division.
Fulham have picked up 9 points from the last 15 available in the Premier League and that has also been important so the team have not lost too much confidence, despite a slower than expected start to the campaign. They have won 6 of the last 8 games played at Craven Cottage in all competitions with the exceptions being defeats to the current top two in the standings.
Antonee Robinson and Rodrigo Muniz are both expected to miss out.
Crystal Palace
They did not need to be at their most convincing best when beating Burnley on Wednesday night and Crystal Palace continue to look like a dark horse to get themselves into the top four mix. The top of the Premier League looks wide open for a surprise club or two to earn the right to play in the top UEFA competition next season, although Oliver Glasner will need to manage the minutes in a very busy month before reinforcements may be signed.
The Eagles are up to 5th in the Premier League table and the manager has helped the team to continue to tick off the points, despite injuries and a fairly limited depth in the squad. It is the 4-1-2 away record where Crystal Palace have really made hay and they have scored 9 goals in those games, while conceding just 4.
Crystal Palace had lost consecutive fixtures before battling for a 0-1 win at Turf Moor during the week and the manager is likely to be grateful that this fixture has been scheduled for Sunday. The three points earned against Burnley means Crystal Palace have won 3 of the last 4 away games in all competitions.
Ismaila Sarr is still expected to be absent and he may not be available for a while. Borna Sosa is expected to make the short trip with the squad to West London for this derby.
Head to Head
Both away teams won Premier League games against the other last season by the same 0-2 scoreline.
Crystal Palace also won 0-3 here in the FA Cup Quarter Final on the way to picking up the trophy and they are now unbeaten in 7 games at Craven Cottage.
In that time, Crystal Palace have won 4 times.
Prediction
These two London clubs were involved in very different kinds of fixtures during the week and the likelihood is that this one is going to travel in a direction closer to the Crystal Palace battling win at Turf Moor rather than Fulham's nine goal thriller against Manchester City.
Neutrals would have enjoyed the game more than either manager and Marco Silva will have been disappointed with some of the defending his Fulham team produced.
It is an outlier in the overall performances at Craven Cottage and you have to expect the home team to get back to basics, while Crystal Palace have lost a key attacker and may be looking to base any success on another strong defensive showing.
Crystal Palace will arrive at Craven Cottage in confident mood considering the record they have when visiting this part of West London.
However, you do have to wonder when the squad will hit the wall as Oliver Glasner continues to guide his team on three fronts in December. There have been times when Crystal Palace have looked tired, and that may give Fulham an opportunity to snap a poor home run against this London rival.
Instead of trying to pick a winner in what looks to be a close and competitive fixture, backing under 2.5 goals is an appealing angle.
You have to believe Fulham will want to show off much more resiliency than they did in the defeat to Manchester City, while the previous 6 home Premier League games had a combined 12 goals after the nine goals shared out on Tuesday.
Having a bit more time should see Fulham a bit more organised, while Crystal Palace have remained pretty solid at the back.
Oliver Glasner's team have just been a bit more inconsistent in the final third and the away games played this season has underlined the point with just 13 goals scored in the 7 fixtures played on their travels.
The first goal could be hugely important with that in mind, but this is unlikely to be a fixture with a lot of goals being scored and especially not after big efforts made during the week.
