After back-to-back wins, Hamburger SV were brought back down to earth with a 4-1 defeat at TSG Hoffenheim last week.
Hamburger SV are four points clear of the relegation zone, so they are safe for now, but consistency is a big concern as they head into the winter break. They must sign some players for the looming relegation battle, as I doubt they can hold on with the team they have.
At home, HSV have been solid, unbeaten in their last three Bundesliga games, winning twice against VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen, and drawing against Borussia Dortmund.
This marks one of their better stretches at the Volkspark Stadion in recent years - the last time Hamburger SV managed three consecutive home wins was in the 2017/18 Bundesliga season.
Eintracht Frankfurt
Eintracht Frankfurt narrowly beat Augsburg 1-0 last time out, making it three wins in their last five Bundesliga outings, a solid return that keeps them firmly in the mix for European qualification places.
There’s a real attacking threat in their ranks, particularly from Japanese Ritsu Doan, who has been involved in more goals than anyone else in Eintracht Frankfurt’s squad this term (four goals, four assists), and the Eagles have always won when he’s had a goal involvement this season.
That said, this trip isn’t without its challenges. Eintracht Frankfurt are missing its key midfield duo, Farès Chaïbi and Ellyes Skhiri, as both have been called up for the Africa Cup of Nations.
Eintracht Frankfurt also haven’t kept a single clean sheet away from home in the Bundesliga this season and were thrashed 6‑0 at RB Leipzig in their last away game, which remains their heaviest defeat under manager Dino Toppmöller.
The Betting Verdict
Despite Hamburger SV’s decent home form, Eintracht Frankfurt are the stronger side on paper and have been more consistent this season.
Even missing a couple of midfielders, the Eagles still carry more firepower and attacking quality, and HSV’s defensive mistakes make them vulnerable to conceding.
I expect an open game with goals at both ends, but Eintracht Frankfurt should just have enough to edge this one and take the win.
