Brentford
The final fixture of 2025 could not have gone any better for Brentford who thumped Bournemouth at home and they will open up 2026 in the same Stadium. Keith Andrews will be hoping that key players are retained by the club through the January transfer window, although the likelihood is that more additions are not going to be made.
The Bees are 8th in the Premier League table and once again fans will be dreaming of potentially seeing the club playing in European Football in 2026. Home form has been very important for Brentford who have a 6-2-1 record at the Gtech Community Stadium where they have scored 20 goals this season.
Brentford had been through a little slump in form in December, but consecutive Premier League wins over Wolves and Bournemouth will have given the entire squad a lift. Since losing to Manchester City, Brentford have won 4 of the last 5 fixtures played at home with the exception being a 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
Sepp van den Berg is a doubt for the home team.
Tottenham Hotspur
Thomas Frank will have overseen a win over Crystal Palace that has eased some of the pressure on his shoulders, but a loss at the home of the club where he previously managed will not go down that well with the Tottenham Hotspur supporters. Expectations have to be tempered, but that is never going to happen at a club that feel they are a part of the 'Big Six' and that has not helped the manager.
Three points secured at Selhurst Park has pushed Tottenham Hotspur back up into 11th place in the Premier League table, but that will still be seen as a disappointment within the fanbase. Statistically, Spurs have the best away record in the Premier League and that currently reads 5-2-2 after the win in South London.
Tottenham Hotspur have won 3 of the last 5 games in all competitions and they snapped a sequence of consecutive losses in the victory last Sunday. Prior to that victory at Selhurst Park, Tottenham Hotspur had been struggling for away form having lost 4 of 5 games played on their travels.
Lucas Bergvall should be available, while Cristian Romero is back from a domestic suspension.
Head to Head
Tottenham Hotspur beat Brentford 2-0 at home in early December.
Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur had drawn 3 Premier League games in succession in West London, but that sequence was ended in a 0-2 away win for Spurs in February 2025.
Prediction
This looks like it has the making of an intriguing Premier League game on Thursday evening on New Year's Day.
Thomas Frank will be given a warm welcome on his return to Brentford, but the away supporters have yet to take to the manager in the same way his former club did. Some of the football has not been pleasing for the Tottenham Hotspur supporters, but the results have not allowed Thomas Frank the time and space he likely will need to really get his methods across at Spurs.
The win at Crystal Palace is a boost, but it was another game in which Tottenham Hotspur looked second best and they cannot get away with that level consistently.
A 2-0 win over Brentford at home will give the team confidence, while Cristian Romero is back, but there is no doubt that The Bees are a very different team to beat when playing in front of their own supporters.
You have to expect Thomas Frank to be reminding his team all about the challenge of beating Brentford in West London, but Tottenham Hotspur did that eleven months ago. Prior to that, games between Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur had been very competitive and they had shared the points on 3 straight occasions at this ground.
Brentford have not changed too much, despite losing Frank and key players in the summer, and Keith Andrews has to be given credit.
Those coming into the starting eleven have also made up for the players that have departed and Brentford have been scoring goals for fun at the Gtech Community Stadium.
However, they have also been a little vulnerable at the back and that should mean this develops into an entertaining fixture for the neutral tuning in on New Year's Day.
An early goal should spark things on what is going to be a cold, but dry night and that should allow both teams to get on the front foot. Both teams scoring would not be a big surprise and we should see at least three goals shared out in this latest London derby.
