Dundalk slipped to only their second defeat in 14 matches in the Irish Premier Division last weekend when Ciarán Kilduff’s side were dealt a disappointing 2-0 defeat away from home at Sligo Rovers but at least the hosts will return to home surroundings for this upcoming clash against Shelbourne on Friday night.
Prior to last weekend’s loss, Dundalk had put together an impressive eight-match unbeaten sequence in the Irish top flight which included collecting five wins in the process, four of which were achieved on home soil at their Oriel Park.
Recent victories against the likes of Waterford, Sligo Rovers, St Patricks Athletic and Galway United respectively have helped lift Dundalk up into 3rd spot in the Premier Division table and another three points on Friday night could bring them to within a point of 2nd placed Shamrock Rovers.
Shelbourne meanwhile occupy a lowly 8th place in the Premier Division table where they find themselves level on points with second from bottom outfit Drogheda United after suffering four league defeats on the trot.
The visitors had previously put together a four-game unbeaten sequence which included wins against Derry City and Sligo Rovers but subsequent damaging losses at the hands of Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers, Derry City and Drogheda United suggest the visitors face a tough night at the office on Friday.
Joseph O’Brien’s side have made a promising start to this new season away from home though as they possess an away record of 3-1-1 8/6 to date.
