This is going to be a challenging season for HSV, who I believe will fight against relegation. They started with a 2-0 away defeat to Borussia Dortmund, struggling to create enough in attack but looking more dangerous after the break.
Now, coach Merlin Polzin will certainly want a much more positive display in their first home league game of the season. They did at least play well in the DFB-Pokal, beating SC Verl 0-3 with Albert Gronbæk scoring twice.
There is also a useful attacking option returning to the spotlight in Yussuf Poulsen, who is set to make his 250th Bundesliga appearance.
However, Hamburger SV have not been particularly strong at home in 2026, winning only two of nine Bundesliga matches at the Volksparkstadion since the winter break (from January onwards).
Mainz
Mainz opened their Bundesliga season with an uninspiring goalless draw, being held 0-0 by SC Paderborn at home. That means neither side has scored in the Bundesliga yet, although Mainz had a much more productive cup, crushing VfB Krieschow 9-0 in the DFB-Pokal.
Mainz’s away form is the more interesting angle here. Mainz have been difficult to beat on the road under Urs Fischer, losing only two of their previous 11 Bundesliga away games.
There are some absences to consider, with Dominik Kohr, Eric Martel, Paul Nebel, Benedict Hollerbach and Silas all unavailable according to the latest team-news listings.
The Betting Verdict
This looks much closer than the opening-weekend results might suggest.
Both teams failed to score in their first league game, and Mainz have a particularly strong recent away record.
HSV have home advantage and showed they can score in the cup, but Mainz look capable of making this another tight game.
I would go here with under 2.5 goals at excellent odds.
