Tennis: Nitto ATP Finals London
17th November 2018 – Start time 20:00 [London, England Time]
Introduction:
The second semi final will be between Novak Djokovic from Serbia and Kevin Anderson from South Africa. Djokovic has won two out of their three head to head this season. Both players are in good form, and especially so for Djokovic.
Novak Djokovic
In his first two matches he has confirmed his semi finals slot. Even though at the time of writing he is still playing Marin Cilic and leads by 7-6 after the first set, even if he suffers a defeat in this match it will not change a thing.
After the match against Zverev and Isner, the lineup for the semi finalist will be expected to be known and that was what had happened. Alexander Zverev managed to beat John Isner without dropping a set and that means Djokovic will finish top of Group A. That also meant Cilic will no longer have a chance to reach the semi finals.
It was an expected result for the World No.1 who has played fantastic this season to regain the top spot after Nadal pulled out injured in the last Paris Masters. He is now the favourite to win this title as well.
No doubt most tennis fans will be expecting to see a Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer final. However, Zverev and Anderson will be hoping to cause an upset in the semi finals and they have both made a good impression at the ATP Finals so far in London.
Kevin Anderson
The South African definitely deserves credit for making it to the semi finals and in so doing becomes the first South African to achieved that feat as well.
Despite having problems with injuries on the tour, it did not significantly affected him. The results in this tournament as well as in other tournament has showed that Anderson has successfully managed to overcome his injury problems. After the first two round the South African has confirmed his place in the semi finals, and it doesn't matter that he came up against Federer in his last group match.
In his first match against Dominic Thiem, Anderson did most of the job. The second match against Japanese Kei Nishikori nothing much needed to be said as Nishikori was simply outplayed and he only won one game. Thus the last match of the group against Roger Federer did not had any bearing, but Anderson still played well. However he lost due to a poorer percentage of the first service and had committed more unforced errors throughout the game.
Past Meetings:
Anderson had managed to defeat Djokovic only once but has lost his seven other meetings to the Serbian. This season they met twice and one of them was in the final of Wimbledon, where Djokovic won easily, but it can be argued that Anderson was exhausted after his semi final match. The second match took place at recently finished Masters in Shanghai and once again Djokovic came out victorious with 7-6 and 6-3.
