PREVIEW
Bolton will play their game in hand over their relegation rivals as they host Tottenham, who need all 3 points too in their own race to finish in the top 4. At one point you probably could have gotten BetFred to pay out on that bet (heh!) but Spurs have since dropped game after game and point after point and seem as if they could now miss out to Chelsea or even Newcastle!
Tottenham have not scored in 4 league away games now, which is a staggering statistic. They simply must score here or else their hopes for Champions League football are surely over. They will surely get their chances, for Bolton have conceded 33 here at home, 2nd most conceded at home after Wolves, and they have failed to keep Tottenham off the scoresheet in their last 10 meetings.
Just last month these two met each other twice in the FA Cup and Tottenham scored in the abandoned game and then again in the replay when they knocked Bolton out. Tottenham have been very good at breaking and counter attacking, and stats show they have managed to break and make attempts on 32 counter attacking moves, more than anyone else.
Bolton's defence just isn't good enough to deal with that, and with players like Vaart and Adebayor in the side, you wouldn't bet against Spurs scoring.
Tottenham have scored exactly 2 goals in each of their last 3 Premier League games here at the Reebok Stadium but have just 1 draw to show from those games as they've been beaten in the others. Bolton and Spurs have averaged 5 goals a match over those 3 games, and I remember making a small fortune last year when I suggested bets on Bolton to win and on Kevin Davies to score.
Still, that was then, and this season Bolton have picked up fewer points at home than 18 other Premier League sides. Only Wolves did worse and they are already relegated. Spurs seem to have bounced back recently with that 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers over the weekend, but that came after a run of 4 games without a win.
Tottenham had a goalless draw with Sunderland and were then beaten by Norwich, Chelsea and QPR before they picked up points against the Rovers. Against another relegation candidate they might fancy their chances, but recent history suggests this game is anything but a given.
BETTING VERDICT
I would absolutely love to see Spurs lose, but I'm not about to stick my money on it. Bolton have fought admirably for a team that has been so poor all season, and just like Wigan are showing they are going to be a handful to deal with as the season draws to a close.
I think we're going to see 2 desperate sides go at each other with nothing really to lose, so there should be goals aplenty in this one, but I really fancy Kevin Davies to score here again as he seems to always give it his all.
