The World Series has become a best of three setting after the Toronto Blue Jays rallied for a 6-2 win in Game 4 on Tuesday night and it really does feel like all is to play for.
Instead of feeling sorry for themselves after the long Game 3 defeat, the Blue Jays found a way to get after Shohei Ohtani and they put together the clutch Inning in the 7th to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers. Both teams will have largely protected the bullpens, which is very important, and now the pressure intensifies with this final game at Dodger Stadium before the World Series shifts back to Toronto for at least one more game.
We go back to Game 1 starters for this hugely important Game 5.
That means the Blue Jays are going in with Trey Yesavage and the Dodgers will be handing the ball to Blake Snell.
Trey Yesavage has shown so much in his limited Major League experience and he was able to hold this deep Dodgers batting lineup to two runs in 4 Innings thrown on Friday night. He has issued three Walks in each of the last three starts made in the post-season, but Yesavage has not lost any confidence and three of the four Playoff starts have seen him depart with just two earned runs allowed.
Having to face the Los Angeles Dodgers for a second time is going to be a challenge, but Trey Yesavage will point to the Championship Series win over the Seattle Mariners as a cause for more confidence. After allowing five runs the first time he faced the Mariners, Yesavage limited the same team in two runs in the second start against them and he will feel he can keep what has been an inconsistent Offensive Los Angeles output contained again.
Blake Snell returns to the mound for the Dodgers and he had been a perfect 3-0 in the Playoffs, while holding a 0.86 ERA in those three starts made. Game 1 proved very different with Snell allowing five runs in 5 Innings thrown and he had to take the decision loss, but he has a 5-4 record and 2.39 ERA in sixteen regular starts against the Toronto Blue Jays, which means having the confidence to bounce back.
One of those starts was made at Dodger Stadium in August and Blake Snell did not give up a single run in 5 Innings thrown.
Prediction
It really has been a fascinating World Series and the first four games have gone back and forth, although there will be some concern that the Los Angeles Dodgers have lost some rhythm at the plate.
The bats were not exactly firing in the previous three Playoff Series, but the starting rotation had been dominant.
It has not been the case in the two defeats in the World Series and the starters have been hit hard without any help from those batting.
This gives the Toronto Blue Jays a chance, especially if Trey Yesavage continues to find his best pitches when seemingly under the most duress.
However, Blake Snell is unlikely to be as generous as he was in Game 1 and that makes this a very tough Game 5 to call, one that feels pivotal to the eventual outcome of the World Series.
Finding an angle in the outright markets is tough with the Dodgers set as a strong favourite.
You could perhaps back this game to feature eight or more runs, although that looks a short price with the main line sitting dead on 8 runs.
Instead it could pay to back to the starting pitchers to have to issue at least three Walks each- that has been the case in each of the last three Trey Yesavage starts, and also happened in two of the last three starts made by Blake Snell. The latter also issued three Walks to Toronto in the regular season and both starters are expected to have to to go at least 4 Innings in this one, which should see those potential numbers hit at least three for both.
At Bet365, both are odds against to offer up three or more Walks, which could be taken on as Singles.
The Double pays out at 4.40, which could be worthy of backing.
Trey Yesavage has continued to bamboozle batters too and he is 1.66 with the same company to have at least five Strikeouts, which has become a feature of his starts and should be a number that can be reached against this big swinging lineup.
The Blue Jays might have upset the odds in Game 4, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr came up big for the Prop selections with an early Home Run.
Blake Snell got knocked around in Game 1, but he only allowed a single Home Run and this is a pitcher that does not give up the deep shot very often.
Prior to Game 1, Blake Snell was proving tough to Hit, never mind giving up a Home Run, but Trey Yesavage has been a little more vulnerable. He has got out of some jams and Yesavage has contained the deep shot for most intents and purposes, but he has allowed at four Hits in each of his last three Playoff starts.
Trey Yesavage is 1.68 to give up at least four Hits again, which is a reachable number for the Dodgers if the rookie is given at least Four Innings again, which has to be expected. The batter markets look much tougher to call and so this Game 5 feels like one where we can focus on those starting pitchers and the Prop markets rather than anything outright.
