Preview
Both of these struggling teams have picked up a win in this three game series and the decider is set for Wednesday afternoon.
The Boston Red Sox (32-45) took the second game behind another big performance from Sonny Gray and it feels inevitable that the pitcher will be heading to a contender before the trade deadline. The win also pushed them past the Colorado Rockies (31-49) in what may end up being a race to avoid finishing with the worst record in the Major Leagues, a stunning disappointment for a team with Playoff aspirations coming into 2026.
In the last of this three game set, the Boston Red Sox will turn to Ranger Suarez who has a 3-3 record and 2.93 ERA in fourteen starts in his maiden season with this team. He has formed a solid part of the rotation, but the Red Sox have struggled to back him up, as they have other pitchers on the roster and that has left Ranger Suarez scrambling to do what he can to keep Boston in games.
A couple of rough starts to end May have not dented the Ranger Suarez confidence and he has put together three solid starts in June. The starter has allowed just three runs in 18 Innings thrown across those three starts, while Ranger Suarez picked up the decision win last time out against the Seattle Mariners.
After spending the opening of his Major League career in the National League, Ranger Suarez will be familiar with the Colorado Rockies and this ballpark. Last year he pitched here for the Philadelphia Phillies and Ranger Suarez earned the decision win after keeping the Rockies scoreless into the 7th Inning.
The Rockies will counter by handing the ball to Kyle Freeland who has a 1-7 record and a 7.36 ERA in thirteen starts for Colorado.
The most of recent of those starts was pretty impressive as Kyle Freeland held the Pittsburgh Pirates to two runs into the 8th Inning, but the bullpen issues meant he was not a factor in the final decision. Prior to that outing, Freeland had allowed at least three runs in each of his previous nine starts and so the veteran has something to build upon.
Kyle Freeland pitched against the Red Sox at Fenway Park last year and was given the decision loss after allowing three runs in a little under 6 Innings thrown. This is the third career start against the Boston Red Sox, but Freeland has never pitched against this opponent at home.
Prediction
Backing bad teams can be haphazard, but the Boston Red Sox are facing another one of those and they look to have the pitcher edge to start this final game of a three game set.
Momentum is also with the Red Sox and they may get the better of the Colorado Rockies again.
The Pick :
Colorado Rockies 3-6 Boston Red Sox
