Crystal Palace
Keeping the current squad together rather than adding to it looks to be the main aim for Patrick Vieira at Crystal Palace during the January transfer window. The manager has refused to sanction a transfer for Christian Benteke from the club and the Crystal Palace players do look much happier playing in a system in which they are asked to get forward and attack where they can.
They are 11th in the Premier League table and Crystal Palace will be aiming to earn a top half finish as well as a long FA Cup run over the next four months. The Eagles have a 4-5-2 record at home in the Premier League where they have scored 20 goals and conceded 12.
Crystal Palace have lost 1 of their last 4 games in all competitions and they have won twice in that, although it could have been even more positive if they had held onto a lead at Brighton last time out. They had been unbeaten in 3 home Premier League games and Crystal Palace had won twice in that time before losing 2-3 to West Ham United.
Jordan Ayew is back from the African Cup of Nations, but both James Tomkins and James McArthur are ruled out with injuries. Wilfred Zaha is still representing the Ivory Coast and will not be back until the FA Cup Fourth Round tie.
Liverpool
It is going to take something a little special for Liverpool to chase down Manchester City in the Premier League title race over the coming months, but the first silverware of the season could potentially be won by The Reds. They secured their place in the League Cup Final next month by beating Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday and Liverpool will be hoping to use that momentum through this final fixture until February.
Results last weekend have seen Liverpool climb into 2nd place in the Premier League table, but they are 11 points behind Manchester City. That is a big gap even though Liverpool have a game in hand, but all they can do is focus on their own fixtures. The side have a 6-3-2 record away from home in the Premier League.
Liverpool are unbeaten in 5 games in all competitions and they have won 3 of their last 4, even without Mo Salah and Sadio Mane. This weekend the focus will be trying to snap a run of 3 away Premier League games without a win, although in that time Liverpool have won at AC Milan and Arsenal.
Joel Matip, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Fabinho are all hoping to be passed fit ahead of this fixture.
Head to Head
Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 3-0 at home earlier this season.
Revenge will be on the mind of the Crystal Palace players after being embarrassed 0-7 in their last home game against Liverpool.
In fact Liverpool have won 7 straight visits to Selhurst Park.
Prediction
The first live game in the Premier League this Sunday comes from Selhurst Park and I do think Crystal Palace look to be a little under-rated in this one.
Take nothing away from Liverpool after the 0-2 win at Arsenal in the League Cup Semi Final Second Leg, but they are missing their top two striking options. While they have largely coped without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, Liverpool are also a team that have proven to be a little more vulnerable away from home in the Premier League in recent weeks and they have won none of their last 3 away League fixtures.
That cannot be ignored even if Crystal Palace have been a touch more vulnerable in recent home games. They were beaten 2-3 by West Ham United in the last fixture here, but Crystal Palace have been a positive team and they will get forward and look to test Liverpool.
The fans will remember watching the 0-7 home loss to Liverpool outside of the Stadium last season, but those fans can get behind Crystal Palace here and make it much more awkward for the visiting team. Liverpool do have a very good record at Selhurst Park in recent years, but they have shown some defensive vulnerability away from home that can be exploited by Crystal Palace.
Liverpool have shown they can score goals without their top two attacking players and I think they will be able to cause problems for Crystal Palace too.
It all points to what could be a decent game for the neutral and I would not be surprised if there are at least three goals shared out. 5 of the last 6 between the clubs have finished with that mark reached, while 9 of the last 10 at Selhurst Park have done the same.
Both teams could find the back of the net on the way to a high-scoring fixture being produced.
