Liverpool
There were a few more changes made to the starting lineup last weekend than some Liverpool fans may have expected and Arne Slot could restore some of the key players that have contributed to crowning the club English Champions again. The chance to face what many expected to be Liverpool's main title contender gives the home team an opportunity to stamp their authority over all of their rivals in the top flight.
The Premier League title race felt run some time ago, but it was only a couple of weeks ago when it became official and Liverpool could no longer be caught. The Reds have a 14-2-1 record at Anfield in the Premier League and the manager may be looking for a strong end to the campaign to ensure momentum is right behind Liverpool when it all begins again in August.
Liverpool had won 3 Premier League games in a row, but started slowly at Chelsea last Sunday and were well beaten when all was said and done. Playing at Anfield should create a different atmosphere and emotion for the team and Liverpool have won 7 straight League games here.
Joe Gomez is set to be the only absentee and the likes of Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister are expected to be back in the starting lineup. Trent Alexander-Arnold announced he will be leaving Liverpool next month and is expected to start, even if not all fans are behind the decision he has made.
Arsenal
There is no doubt that Arsenal played their part in the Champions League Semi Final, but Mikel Arteta will have raised some eyebrows across Europe when suggesting his team had been the best in the competition this season. He even made a comment that the Paris Saint-Germain bench had told him Arsenal 'deserved' to go through, although that was disputed wholeheartedly by Luis Enrique.
The manager may be feeling some pressure having overseen a fifth consecutive season without silverware, despite the obvious improvements Arsenal have made under Mikel Arteta's guidance. They finish up the campaign with three Premier League games and Arsenal are 2nd in the table, but potentially still needing another win to ensure they do not fall out of the top five places and missing out on a Champions League berth next season. The side head to the North West on Sunday with a 8-7-2 record away from home in the top flight.
Arsenal could be under some pressure at kick off if the teams chasing them in the Premier League table have all picked up positive results, but Newcastle United play Chelsea and that works in their favour. It does not cover the fact that Arsenal have won none of their last 4 games in all competitions, nor the fact that Arsenal have lost 3 in a row. Arsenal had won back to back away games at Real Madrid and Ipswich Town before losing in Paris on Wednesday evening.
Kai Havertz is edging closer to a return, but will not be risked this weekend. The lineup could have a couple of changes made to it to freshen things up and that could mean Ben White and Leandro Trossard are given starting spots.
Head to Head
Arsenal and Liverpool played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium earlier this season.
The last 3 games hosted by Liverpool have all ended in draws against Arsenal, including back to back Premier League fixtures at Anfield.
Liverpool had won 6 Premier League games in a row at Anfield against Arsenal before those consecutive draws.
Prediction
It was something of a surprise to see the amount of changes Arne Slot made to his starting lineup at Chelsea last weekend, but Liverpool should have a much more familiar look on Sunday.
Two games remain at Anfield for the new Champions and Slot will know that the fans want to see his strongest teams in both of those to really celebrate the end of the campaign.
The motivation to pick a strong team can only be higher when considering Liverpool are hosting Arsenal this Sunday, the team who offered the greatest 'resistance' to The Reds charge towards a 20th League title. Liverpool will be keen to show the rest of the Division that they are the best team in England and beating the current 2nd placed team will be something that they are keen to do.
It helps that Liverpool are hosting Arsenal days after the latter were beaten in the Champions League Semi Final.
Mikel Arteta felt his team deserved so much more, but the injuries have made things difficult and Arsenal have now lost 3 in a row in all competitions. Falling out of the top five would still need an exceptional set of results, and so there is a feeling that Arsenal may travel to Anfield without the necessary intensity to hold off the home team.
In recent years the defensive strengths of Arsenal have helped them contain Liverpool, even when put under pressure, but this is a group that put in so much into the Champions League Semi Final. This may leave them vulnerable and Arsenal may struggle if Liverpool are anywhere close to the levels they had been producing before the trip to Stamford Bridge last weekend.
Anfield will certainly help and Liverpool look a decent shout at odds against to get the better of The Gunners.
Arsenal have to feeling the efforts of getting so close to a second Champions League Final and a well rested home team should have the qualities to secure another victory in front of their own fans.
As long as Arne Slot picks his first choice midfield, which should be the case after they were rested at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool can edge to the three points.
