Fulham
Every football squad benefits from having some new faces around the club and Marco Silva is hoping the Fulham board are going to be able to sign some new players before the transfer window closes. Keeping hold of Marco Silva feels important for Fulham who scored with virtually the last kick of the game to earn a 1-1 draw at Brighton last Saturday.
The opening fixture of the season at Craven Cottage will be one that the fans are very much looking forward to when hosting one of the top names in world football. It was an inconsistent season for Fulham at home last season where they finished with a 7-5-7 record after scoring 27 goals and conceding 30.
Fulham have won 1 of their last 5 Premier League games and were very much on course for a fourth defeat in that run before the late equaliser against Brighton. The return from the March international break was difficult for Fulham who lost 4 of their last 5 games at Craven Cottage in all competitions, including the last 3 in a row.
Antonee Robinson is set to miss out, while Ryan Sessegnon is hoping to overcome a knock of his own.
Manchester United
Big signings have been made in the final third to help Manchester United to significantly improve their Premier League form after an embarrassing campaign. Both Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo impressed in the first game of the season, but another goalkeeper mistake cost Ruben Amorim's team in an unfortunate 0-1 home defeat to Arsenal.
The manager will know how quickly the pressure will build if Manchester United are not able to bounce back in the three fixtures to be played before the September international break. Ruben Amorim made it clear how much happier he was watching Manchester United play compared with the last few weeks of the season, and he will be hoping they can take those levels away from Old Trafford. Last season the side ended with a 4-6-9 away record in the top flight.
Manchester United played well, but were ultimately beaten last Sunday and that means they have lost 5 of their last 7 games in all competitions. That defeat last Sunday also means Manchester United have suffered 5 losses in 7 Premier League games and these are numbers that have to be changed. The side travel to West London having lost 4 of the last 5 away Premier League games played.
Noussair Mazraoui is hoping to return before the September international break, while Lisandro Martinez has to wait a bit longer. Andre Onana is back in training and so the manager has a big decision to make in goal, while Benjamin Sesko may come in to lead the line.
Head to Head
Manchester United won both Premier League games against Fulham by the same 1-0 scoreline.
However, it was Fulham who won a Penalty Shoot Out at Old Trafford in the FA Cup Fifth Round.
Fulham have been beaten 8 times in a row at Craven Cottage against this opponent.
Prediction
A soft goal was given away by Manchester United mainly due to poor goalkeeping, but credit has to be given to the team for the overall performance against Arsenal.
Dominating the shot count and putting the title contenders under pressure will have given the fans something to hang onto, although there will also be frustration that Manchester United suffered another defeat and failed to score again.
Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo offered plenty in the final third and they could be joined by Benjamin Sesko, which should make Manchester United that much more dangerous.
Fulham may have more points on the board after a very late goal at the Amex Stadium, but they did not play that well and Marco Silva will want more from his team.
Being back at home should help the players, and the fans will push Fulham forward, but they will need to be more focused at both ends of the field if they are going to earn a positive result against Manchester United.
It has been fifteen years since Fulham earned a positive home result against this opponent, although they have been unfortunate in recent seasons.
Two 90th minute winners and another in the 78th minute have helped Manchester United to their last 3 wins at Craven Cottage, while they came from behind to win 1-2 here in January 2021.
Last season Manchester United were pretty poor away from home in the Premier League, but Fulham are not a team that have been dominant at Craven Cottage. This is a team that conceded too many goals here last season and Fulham could find it tough to contain Manchester United if they are not much improved from the performance offered last Saturday.
In the main Manchester United defended pretty well against Arsenal and it feels like they can make odds against quotes pay out here.
With those new signings in the final third, Manchester United can certainly find a way to goal at a ground where they have continued to churn out the victories over the years. Building on that performance against Arsenal will be challenging as Manchester United try to find some consistency, but they can earn a first victory of the season against a Fulham team that did not play well last weekend and who ended last season in poor form at Craven Cottage.
