Denmark will play host to Scotland at Parken in Copenhagen on Friday night in Group C as both nations start their respective World Cup qualifying campaigns with the Danes looking to make it three wins on the trot.
Recent international friendlies against Northern Ireland and Lithuania will give Brian Riemer’s side plenty of confidence as they swept aside their opponents in 2-1 and 5-0 victories respectively and Denmark will be eager to produce a positive start to the Group C fixtures as it looks like being a three-way battle to claim top spot in the group.
Greece and Belarus are the other nations vying for a place in next year’s World Cup finals but having produced an encouraging showing in the Nations League where Denmark made it through to the quarter-finals and beat Portugal 1-0 at home, Friday night’s hosts have shown they are capable of claiming a result here.
Scotland have also played recent international friendlies in warm-up games before the World Cup qualifiers with mixed results; a 3-1 loss at home to Iceland was followed with the Scots inflicting a 4-0 rout of Liechtenstein away from home.
Previously, Scotland had finished in 3rd place in League A Group 1 and just a point behind 2nd placed Croatia but this was not enough to prevent Steve Clarke’s side from being involved in a relegation/promotion play-off tie with Greece.
Scotland registered a creditable 1-0 in Greece before slumping to a 3-1 loss at Hampden Park in the return leg so Clarke’s side will be plying their Nations League trade in League B in the next edition of the competition.
