Brentford
Keith Andrews can only be very pleased with what he saw from his Brentford team on Monday night as they dominated in East London. The worry that key departures both in the management office and on the field may lead to a very tough season for Brentford are being erased all of the time under the novice manager and confidence is growing.
In recent years Brentford have been pushing towards the European places in the Premier League and while that is unlikely this time around, this is a team that looks capable of avoiding the drop. The Bees moved up into 13th place in the Premier League table after picking up the three points on Monday and they have secured 10 points already. Home form is still going to be the main foundation from which Brentford can build and they have a 2-1-1 record at the Gtech Community Stadium this season.
Brentford's board have to be happy with what they have seen through the first three months of the season, but the manager may be looking for a bit more overall consistency having won 2 and lost 2 of the last 4 Premier League games played. They had been unbeaten in 4 at home in all competitions, but that run was ended when Brentford were narrowly beaten by Manchester City before the October international break.
Aaron Hickey is hoping to return this weekend.
Liverpool
Some of the recent excuses coming from Arne Slot have been pretty embarrassing after Liverpool's run of defeats, but he must have been much happier seeing Eintracht Frankfurt playing to the strength of the English Champions. After snapping the momentum, Slot and Liverpool will travel to West London in a bid to get their Premier League form back on track.
Despite the late defeats suffered in recent Premier League games, Liverpool are still 3rd in the standings and only 4 points behind Arsenal, which is not insurmountable in October. All they can do is concentrate on their own results right now and The Reds will be bidding to improve the 2-0-2 away record in the top flight.
Liverpool had lost 4 in a row in all competitions and the 3 straight Premier League defeats had seen them concede the winning goal after the 83rd minute, which is a mirror to how they had won some of the early fixtures played. The win in Frankfurt ended a run of 3 away defeats in all competitions, but Liverpool fans will note they are bidding to avoid a third away defeat in London this Saturday evening.
Alexander Isak picked up a groin issue on Wednesday and he is unlikely to be risked. Jeremie Frimpong is another who has picked up an issue, which may keep him out until after the next international break. Liverpool will be hoping Alisson can return very shortly, while Ryan Gravenberch is a doubt.
Head to Head
Liverpool did the Premier League double over Brentford last season and both games were won 2-0.
The first two games at the Gtech Community Stadium between Brentford and Liverpool ended 3-3 and then 3-1 to The Bees, but Liverpool have won on consecutive visits to this part of West London.
Prediction
After falling behind on Wednesday, some fans may have been concerned that Liverpool were set to be on the wrong side of yet another defeat.
However, the awful defending that Eintracht Frankfurt have been producing in the Bundesliga showed up again and Liverpool were rampant by the end.
They will be expecting to be without Alexander Isak this weekend, but that may not be a big issue- he may be the bigger money signing, but Isak has not played nearly as effectively as Hugo Ekitike and it was the former Eintracht Frankfurt player who equalised on Wednesday.
He can lead the line effectively against this Brentford team who have perhaps surprised some with the early season results under Keith Andrews.
However, Brentford have not been the most consistent team and they will have to defend better than they did in the first half when hosting Manchester City earlier in the month. The final scoreline was only 0-1 and Brentford were much improved in the second half, but Manchester City found themselves in really strong positions in the first half and the game could have been out of sight.
Liverpool have enjoyed their last couple of visits to the Gtech Community Stadium and the win on Wednesday should have given them a real boost.
Back to back defeats in London will perhaps have some feeling a bit more cautious, but Liverpool are still creating a lot of chances and they may be able to break down Brentford in this Premier League game.
Keith Andrews and the home team cannot be completely dismissed- the direct style will see Brentford force some promising positions of their own, and they have given the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea big problems, while also pushing Manchester City. Set pieces are also a key part of the successes that Brentford could have in this fixture.
If this game was being played immediately following the Liverpool home loss to Manchester United, it might have been even more dangerous. However, the win in Frankfurt on Wednesday is sure to have given the squad a real jolt of confidence and the expectation is that Liverpool back that up with a win in a fixture they will likely need at least two goals to secure maximum points.
