Borussia Mönchengladbach
Borussia Mönchengladbach have lost their opening three Bundesliga games for only the second time in their history. They went down 3-0 at RB Leipzig, lost 3-4 at home to newly promoted SV Elversberg and then suffered a heavy 5-0 defeat at SC Freiburg last week, leaving them bottom of the table with 12 goals conceded.
That defeat also brought a change in the dugout. Eugen Polanski was dismissed from the coaching position, with former Mainz coach Jan-Moritz Lichte taking over on an interim basis. Lichte now has to fix a defense that has conceded four or more in two of its last three matches, while captain Tim Kleindienst is suspended after picking up a red card against SC Freiburg last week.
There are further selection problems. Jens Castrop, Daiki Hashioka, Yukhym Konoplya, Nicolas Kühn and Enzo Leopold remain unavailable, while Hugo Bolin is doubtful.
Mainz
Mainz have four points from their first three games and have already shown two very different sides of their game. They opened with a 0-0 draw against SC Paderborn, then produced an excellent 0-5 away win against Hamburger SV before losing 1-3 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Hamburg performance is particularly relevant here. Sheraldo Becker scored once and supplied two assists, while Phillip Tietz scored twice as Mainz punished Hamburger SV repeatedly in transition.
Mainz have also won their last three Bundesliga away games and another victory here would equal a club record of four consecutive away wins.
There is one fresh concern for coach Urs Fischer, though. First-choice goalkeeper Robin Zentner suffered a hand injury against Eintracht Frankfurt and will miss the coming weeks, leaving Alexander Schwolow to start in goal.
The Betting Verdict
Mainz are the more convincing side early in the season, but I don't want to ignore the new-coach factor at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Lichte gets his first game at Borussia-Park, and a stronger reaction from the hosts is expected.
Again, the goals market looks more appealing to me. Borussia Mönchengladbach have conceded 12 in three games, while Mainz have already scored five away from home this season. Over 2.5 goals is around 1.55, giving us a price above 1.50 without needing to pick a winner.
My main suggestion here is to take Over 2.5 Goals. Mainz have enough attacking quality to expose Borussia Mönchengladbach again, but the hosts should have more going forward with a new coach in charge.
