Hamburger SV have made the worst start in their Bundesliga history, losing all three games without scoring and conceding 12 goals. The latest setbacks were a 0-5 home defeat to Mainz and another 5-0 away loss to RB Leipzig, leaving Merlin Polzin's side bottom of the table.
The attack is the obvious problem, but there are reasons to expect a reaction. Hamburger SV scored in both meetings with Köln in the 2024/25 2. Bundesliga season and won both, while the last Bundesliga meeting at the Volksparkstadion ended 1-1 in March.
Hamburger SV also have several players returning to contention, with Warmed Omari and Albert Sambi Lokonga available after missing recent games.
Köln
Köln have four points from their first three Bundesliga games, starting with a 3-2 win over TSG Hoffenheim before losing 4-1 away against VfB Stuttgart and drawing 1-1 with Werder Bremen last week. The five goals scored are encouraging, but seven conceded show that René Wagner's side are hardly airtight at the back.
There is an interesting weakness for Hamburger SV to target. Köln have conceded in all 11 competitive matches under Wagner, while their current Bundesliga run without a clean sheet has reached 17 games.
Timo Hübers remains out, with Gian-Luca Waldschmidt also doubtful, although the visitors have enough attacking options to cause problems.
The Betting Verdict
I actually like Hamburger SV at the current price. The 0:12 start looks horrible, but Köln have hardly been convincing defensively either, and Hamburger SV have a strong recent record in this fixture.
At around 2.60-70, the home win offers enough value to take a chance on the hosts finally getting their season moving.
There is obvious risk in backing a team that hasn't scored yet, so I wouldn't go too aggressive here.
Hamburger SV to win is my top bet, with Over 2.5 Goals around 1.60 as the alternative. I see Hamburger SV finally finding a response and winning this game 2-1.
