English League Two

2010-01-30 - Aldershot Town vs Grimsby Town

A Sports Betting Pick by Armchair

Aldershot Town v Grimsby Town
Football : England : Coca Cola League Two
Saturday 30th January 2010 – Kickoff 3pm

Aldershot Town entertain a down-hearted Grimsby Town side who are six points adrift of their closest rivals Cheltenham Town, but possess a recent away run of eight games without a win for their troubles.

I was curious to see what odds you’d get on this match, and was pleasantly surprised with the generosity shown by the bookies and in particular, Pinnacle.

Aldershot Town (7th) Home : 8-4-1 29:13

Firstly, Aldershot – they will be looking to stretch their unbeaten home record to seven games at their Recreation Ground, a run which has included impressive wins against Chesterfield (1-0) and Bournemouth (2-1) as well as earning a 1-1 draw with mighty Rochdale.

Perhaps the reason for the slightly high odds is that they fly under the radar a little as a team, but their home record is anything but modest; 8-4-1 29/13, and The Shots are equal leaders with Dagenham & Redbridge as top scoring home sides, even beating Rochdale (28 home goals).

Midfielder Scott Donnelly (8 goals, 7 assists) and striker Marvin Morgan ( 8 goals), along with midfielder Louis Soares (7 goals) are doing most of the damage, and had they been playing stronger opposition I’d have been tempted with the Over 2.5 on this one.

Grimsby Town (23rd) Away : 2-4-6 8:17

Grimsby Town are on a dismal away run of eight games without a win, which culminated in a 1-2 loss at Rotherham Utd last weekend.

Incidentally, that goal at Rotherham was scored by young striker Wes Fletcher in the 90th minute and was their first away goal in five matches, having drawn 0-0 four previous road games in a row at Northampton Town, Lincoln City, Macclesfield Town & Shrewsbury Town - possibly a record for 0-0 draws ?

Not surprisingly, Grimsby have only managed a meager 8 goals on their travels, thus the reason in my opinion to stay away from the Over option.

Grimsby's away record stands at 2-4-6 8:17, with midfielder Peter Sweeney (4 goals) topping their scoring charts, but I envisage another miserable road-trip for their travelling faithful.

THe Betting Verdict

Aldershot should win this and the visiting fans will probably have to endure another rendition of "Sing when you’re fishing, you only sing when you’re fishing" as they file out of Aldershot’s Recreation Ground.

Good luck!
