SUNDERLAND
Sunderland’s last home match of the season sees the visit of south coast club Southampton at the Stadium Of Light as The Black Cats look to secure all three points this afternoon and avoid any last day relegation worries.
Di Canio inspired recent back-to-back wins for his new side with an unbelievable 3-0 result at St James’ Park against bitter local rivals Newcastle United which was then followed up with a 1-0 win over Everton at home, but their poor away form reared it’s ugly head again at Villa Park when they went down 1-6 which virtually sealed Aston Villa’s Premiership status for another season.
Sunderland showed their renewed fighting spirit at home to Stoke City though as they levelled after going down 0-1 which would have given them hope going into this crucial match with fellow strugglers Southampton. Sunderland’s home record stands at 5-7-6 19/18 and they’ve actually lost just twice in their last eight matches which were defeats to Arsenal and Manchester United, while beating West Ham and Everton and four draws against Swansea City, Fulham, Norwich City and of course Stoke.
SOUTHAMPTON
Southampton make the long trip up to the north-east on the back of two straight defeats at home to West Brom 0-3 and a 0-1 loss at Tottenham which means they are still not out of the woods yet and they face a tricky trip to a charged-up Sunderland with thirty-odd thousand Wearsiders shouting their team on.
Pochettino’s men were actually on a six match unbeaten run prior to the West Brom match with wins over Liverpool, Chelsea and Reading whilst nicking points off Norwich City, West Ham and Swansea City, but it now comes down to the last two matches of the season and there’s no time for relegation nerves now.
Southampton’s overall away record stands at 3-6-9 22/35 and they have the fifth worst defensive record on the road in the Premiership having kept just four clean sheets so far. However, they have kept three shut-outs in their last four away and they stand a better chance than normal of keeping another clean sheet against a low-scoring Sunderland outfit.
THE BETTING VERDICT:
This will be a tight game and chances are it’ll probably wind up in a stalemate, but I’ll take Sunderland with the round ball at good odds with a view they might just nick this perhaps 1-0 with a bit of Adam Johnson magic maybe?
