Football: English Premier League
Saturday 10 December 2011 - Kick Off 3pm
Norwich City
Norwich City are one of a whole host of teams that have accumulated 16 points so far this season and Paul Lambert is well aware that his team still have a lot of work to do if they want to maintain their status as a Premier League team. This would have been seen as a winnable game at the beginning of the season, but Newcastle will be a tough test for the Canaries.
The team were not the first this season to take a hammering at the hands of Manchester City in their last game and that pushed them back down to 11th in the table. Norwich are 3-2-2 at Carrow Road this season, scoring 12 goals and conceding 10, making this one of the highest scoring venues in the League.
One area of concern for Paul Lambert will be the fact that they are yet to keep a clean sheet in the League this season, something that could potentially cost them if they don't solve those issues. Norwich will at least be happy with their recent home form as they have lost just 1 of their last 5 at Carrow Road and they did beat QPR last time out 2-1.
Ritchie De Laet should be available for selection and there should be no new injury worries for Paul Lambert.
Newcastle United
Newcastle United were on the end of a controversial refereeing decision, but I was a little surprised with their outrage considering the fortune they received at Old Trafford the week before. While I agree the decision was a bad one, the reaction of Alan Pardew was a tad over the top. The Magpies are still flying high in the Premier League but will want to return to winning ways following their 0-3 loss last weekend.
The team fell to 6th in the table courtesy of that defeat to Chelsea, but they remain in touch with a potential top 4 berth, although any European place would be a real achievement. Newcastle are 3-3-1 away from home, scoring 9 goals and conceding 7 meaning only 2 teams have conceded less goals so far on their travels.
After a run of games where Newcastle won 5 of 6 Premier League games, they come into this one having failed to win any of their last 3. However, they have faced away games at Manchester City and Manchester United and a home game with Chelsea in those games and this will be seen as a much more winnable game. While they have been solid defensively all season, Newcastle have both scored and conceded at least 1 goal in their last 6 away games in all competitions.
Injuries are currently piling up for Alan Pardew's side, with Fabricio Coloccini, Steven Taylor, Mike Williamson and Chiek Tiote missing or doubtful for this game. Danny Guthrie is also missing until the New Year.
Head to Head
These two teams last met in the 2004/05 Premier League season, with Norwich winning here 2-1.
The last 7 games between the sides have seen at least 3 goals scored between the teams, although 4 of those games took place in the early 1990s.
Prediction
This looks like being a game that should produce a few goals. Norwich City have both scored and conceded in their last 5 games at Carrow Road and they are yet to keep a clean sheet this season in all competitions. The Canaries look like a side that likes to get the ball down and play football and I expect Paul Lambert will send his side out to attack and try and pick up the 3 points.
It may not be as difficult getting at Newcastle United considering they are missing their first choice centre halves who have been performing very well this season. We have seen at Manchester United what can happen when there is some uncertainty at this position and Newcastle have conceded at least 1 goal in their last 6 away games in all competitions.
With the defence struggling for personnel, you have to think that Alan Pardew will send his Newcastle team out to relieve pressure by attacking their opponents and they have done well at venues like Stoke City and Wolves and they will feel they can get after this Norwich defence.
Therefore, it looks like the 'Over 2.5 Goals' at 1.85 looks the best way forward in this game.
