Sunderland
Some are beginning to question Regis Le Bris as manager of Sunderland, despite the strong successes the club have had under his watch. Relegation from the Premier League would be a big blow and Le Bris is trying to balance the domestic and European commitments, which proved to be very challenging for Nottingham Forest last season.
A really poor performance on the South Coast saw Sunderland deservedly beaten and also dropped them into 20th place in the Premier League table and with just 4 points earned this season. The majority of those have been earned at the Stadium of Light where The Black Cats have a 1-0-2 record in the Premier League.
Sunderland have been in decent form in the Europa League, but were held to a 1-1 draw at Lech Poznan on Thursday and that means they have won 1 of the last 5 games in all competitions. The bigger worry is that Sunderland have lost 4 Premier League games in a row, including consecutive 0-2 defeats to Arsenal and Brighton at the Stadium of Light.
Kevin Danso is suspended, but Brian Brobbey should be able to lead the line. Thomas Meunier is expected back next weekend.
Leeds United
The second half fightback will have pleased the Leeds United fans, especially against rivals Manchester United, but Daniel Farke will not have been entirely happy with the overall performance. Perhaps it was the tension of expectation that weighed heavily on the Leeds United players, although it will still feel like a point gained after all is said and done.
It is a point that keeps Leeds United in the top seven in the Premier League table and they have already secured 10 points with the ambition being the team challenging for a place in any of the European competitions. The side travel to the North East of England with a 1-1-1 away record where Leeds United have scored and conceded 3 goals.
Leeds United have won 1 of the last 7 games in all competitions, but they have shown plenty of resiliency and only been beaten twice during that time period. Both of those losses have been at Chelsea and Arsenal in the League Cup and Premier League respectively, but Daniel Farke will point out his team have led in both of those away games before losing their way.
Daniel James could return to the squad, but the manager has stated that Anton Stach, Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are all doubts.
Head to Head
Sunderland took four points from Leeds United in the Premier League last season, but the game here ended 1-1.
They were promoted together at the end of the 2024/25 Championship season and the fixture at the Stadium of Light ended in a draw that season as well.
Prediction
A dry afternoon is in store in Sunderland, but heavy winds are likely going to have an impact on the fixture when the home team hosts rivals Leeds United.
This is an important game for both teams who had disappointing results last Sunday, while Sunderland are still trying to find their feet in the Premier League alongside the Europa League commitments added to the schedule.
It does mean Sunderland are travelling back from Poland on Thursday while Leeds United have been preparing.
However, that edge has been blunted by the news that Leeds United could be missing three key attackers for this one with the most notable being Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Daniel Farke is still hopeful the English striker can travel, but any restricted minutes is a blow for Leeds United who have struggled for consistency in the final third.
The manager stated as much in the press conference ahead of the match and Leeds United's lack of firepower is perhaps why 4 of the 7 Premier League games have ended in draws.
Sunderland will be looking to exploit that, although this is a team who have lost 4 Premier League games in a row and have placed Regis Le Bris under a bit of pressure.
The manager could do with a positive run of form, but Sunderland are having a difficult time at both ends of the pitch and that leaves them vulnerable.
A fully fit Leeds United squad could have taken advantage, but this may be a game dominated by the defenders and backing this fixture to end in a stalemate at the Stadium of Light for the third season in succession looks worthy of a small interest.
