Crystal Palace
Balancing the Europa League with the Premier League was always going to be more challenging for Crystal Palace compared with playing in the Conference League last season. It has to be remembered that the team finished in the bottom third of the Premier League in Oliver Glasner's last season and the board and the fans have to remain patient under Pierre Sage.
With that being said, there is no doubt that Pierre Sage is under pressure as manager of the football club, even if the board understand there are factors at play working against the new manager. The Eagles are 14th in the Premier League table, but the thumping loss to rivals Brighton really hurt. Home form has to be improved in the English top flight where Crystal Palace have a 1-0-2 record having scored 6 goals and conceded 8.
Crystal Palace earned a 2-2 draw in Istanbul on Thursday, but that does mean they have won 1 of the last 5 games in all competitions, which has added to the pressure around the manager. They did come from behind to beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 at Selhurst Park in the last Premier League game played here and Crystal Palace have won 3 of the last 4 home games in all competitions.
Jorgen Strand Larsen picked up a knock on Thursday, but Jean-Philippe Mateta was able to start at Besiktas and could lead the line. Dean Henderson is hoping to be available this weekend, but Quinten Timber is a doubt.
Newcastle United
For every Enzo Maresca and Xabi Alonso who have begun life in new managerial roles with successful results, there are managers who will need a bit of time and patience to get the squad on the same page. One of those is sitting in the home dugout, but there is also some early teething troubles for Matthias Jaissle at Newcastle United after taking over just days before the new season begun.
It has been a mixed start to the campaign for Newcastle United who are 11th in the Premier League table and who have 8 points on the board from the opening seven games. The Magpies have a 1-0-2 away record in the Premier League where they have scored 4 goals and conceded 8.
Newcastle United have progressed into the League Cup Fourth Round, but they have won 1 of the last 5 Premier League games and suffered 3 losses in 4 top flight games played. The last couple of away League games have both ended in thumping 4-1 defeats at Leeds United and Coventry City.
Matias Fernandez-Pardo should be available, but both Jacob Ramsey and Anthony Elanga are expected to miss out.
Head to Head
Both Premier League games were won by the home team last season.
Crystal Palace are unbeaten in 5 home games against Newcastle United and have won 2 of the last 4 when hosting this opponent.
Prediction
You have to believe the layers are factoring in Crystal Palace's travel time from Istanbul on Thursday evening to then get ready for a relatively early kick off on Sunday, especially with the clocks set to be moved in between.
That has to be one real reason that Crystal Palace are a big home underdog in this Premier League game.
Otherwise it would make little sense considering Newcastle United have conceded eight goals in consecutive away Premier League defeats and also suffered a home defeat to Aston Villa last weekend.
Both Pierre Sage and Matthias Jaissle are under early pressure, but the former will be given some time considering the injuries that Crystal Palace have suffered. The same can be said for the Newcastle United manager, although recent underlying numbers suggest that they are still struggling to get to grips with what Jaissle expects from his team.
The Magpies have not enjoyed too many recent visits to this part of South London and only potential fatigue reduces the enthusiasm in backing Crystal Palace to maintain that run.
Defensively there is room for improvement, but Crystal Palace will feel they have the qualities in the final third to give Newcastle United a lot of problems and that may help them avoid a defeat at the very least.
The prices certainly feel the wrong way around, although those could be famous last words.
