Manchester United
Most would have already accepted that all was not well at Old Trafford after Lisandro Martinez' comments last week, but just when a line had been drawn under that saga, Manchester United are back in the headlines after a thumping loss at Como. This time it was Bruno Fernandes speaking up about the tactics, but Michael Carrick bit back in the post-match presser and the dressing room sounds fractured.
After dropping two more points in the Premier League last Sunday in between two Champions League defeats, Manchester United being 13th in the Premier League table and with 7 points from 7 games played has heaped the pressure on Michael Carrick. The board are trying to remain patient, but Carrick needs a big result on Sunday at Old Trafford where Manchester United have a 1-1-1 record in the Premier League having scored 6 goals and conceded 4.
Manchester United's defeat at Como means they have not won any of the last 7 games in all competitions since beating Sabah on Match Day 1 of the Champions League, while they have lost 4 of those games. Last season it was the form at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick that had impressed, but Manchester United had lost back to back games here against Manchester City and Brighton before a 1-1 draw with struggling Tottenham Hotspur.
Leny Yoro is available having served a European suspension, but Lisandro Martinez, Ayden Heaven and Marcus Rashford are doubts. Both Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo are expected to miss out again, while the manager has big decisions to make about Bruno Fernandes and his availability following comments made after the defeat on Wednesday.
Bournemouth
All of the European games played this season will feel like a dream come true for Bournemouth fans who would have witnessed supporting a club that was barely doing enough to survive financially. They are on much more stable ground now, but Bournemouth fans will still have enjoyed the thumping 3-0 win over seven time European Champions AC Milan on Thursday night in the Europa League.
Marco Rose will feel his team have picked up some momentum after returning from the international break by capitulating at Stamford Bridge. The Cherries won their first Premier League game last weekend and that has pushed them up into 15th place in the table. They do have a 0-1-2 away record in the League where Bournemouth have scored 4 goals, but also conceded 9.
Bournemouth were crushed 5-1 at Stamford Bridge, but have won 3 in a row in all competitions since then and kept clean sheets in those victories over Sturm Graz, Sunderland and AC Milan. All of those wins have been at the Vitality Stadium and Bournemouth have won 1 of the last 5 away games played in all competitions.
Eli Kroupi is likely going to travel with the squad to Manchester, but Alex Scott is out until after the next international break.
Head to Head
Both Premier League fixtures last season between Bournemouth and Manchester United ended in high-scoring draws.
Bournemouth are now unbeaten in the last 6 against Manchester United overall, but the recent results at Old Trafford have been most impressive.
The Cherries had won consecutive fixtures at this ground by the same 0-3 scoreline before a 4-4 draw in December 2025.
Prediction
There was plenty of passion shown by Michael Carrick as he came out and addressed the media with a five minute monologue in his press conference on Friday.
This is just a couple of days after the embarrassing defeat at Como in the Champions League where Bruno Fernandes questioned the manager, but Michael Carrick made his feelings clear and will be hoping the squad are ready to show much it means to them to play for Manchester United.
We have seen moments where the players have been trying, but the opening weeks of the season has seen too many times when it feels like they have not put in the work needed.
Michael Carrick is under significant pressure and will need a positive response, but hosting bogey team Bournemouth feels like a tough fixture to go into.
In reality people will expect Manchester United to win- they were odds on to win this fixture earlier in the week, but the drift has seen the price move significantly, although United remain favourites.
They have had a bit more time to prepare compared with Bournemouth who were beating Carrick's Manchester United managerial predecessor Ruben Amorim's new team on Thursday, but The Cherries did not have to travel and that will help.
Marco Rose will also feel his team have momentum having won 3 games in a row without conceding a goal, although all of those have been at home. Bournemouth were thumped 5-1 at Chelsea in the last away game played, but conceded twice in the first three minutes and actually performed well enough overall.
Clinical finishing made the scoreline look much more damaging than the performance deserved, but Bournemouth will be confident they have shown enough away from home this season to earn a positive result at Old Trafford.
Alex Scott remains a big miss, but Marco Rose has found some solutions and Bournemouth's recent record against Manchester United overall and at Old Trafford in particular means they are likely going to be back as an underdog to really put the pressure on Michael Carrick.
Bournemouth winning here would not surprise anyone, but the suggestion is backing them to avoid defeat at a decent enough price.
