Liverpool
There would have been one or two worried faces on the sidelines as Liverpool were punished for a slow start against Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday, but the fightback to eventually win 4-3 may have given the players and fans some confidence. Manager Andoni Iraola will be demanding better defensively ahead of a big couple of weeks in the Premier League when Liverpool host two of the current top three.
The Reds also came from behind to win a Premier League game last weekend and that has pushed them back up into 5th place in the table and a point behind Chelsea in the top four. It is something of a surprise that Liverpool have earned 10 of the 12 Premier League points away from home and they will go into this fixture with a 0-2-1 record at Anfield.
Liverpool have won 7 of the last 9 games in all competitions, but it should be noted that both exceptions in that run have been results earned at Anfield. They have yet to win a Premier League game at home and Liverpool have now failed to win any of the last 5 League games at Anfield, but the side have beaten Atletico Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur and Villarreal here in Cup competitions under Andoni Iraola.
Victor Munoz was not available on Tuesday and is considered a doubt, while Dominik Szoboszlai is not expected to return this weekend. Changes had been made to the starting lineup for the win over Villarreal and the likes of Bradley Barcola, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak may start.
Brighton
A much changed Brighton team dropped two points in the Conference League on Thursday, but they remain comfortable in that competition and Fabian Hurzeler clearly had one eye on this big Premier League game at Anfield. His team have begun this season with a lot of confidence, but Brighton are going to be tested in the next couple of League games with trips to Liverpool and Manchester City a chance to prove if they are genuine title contenders or not.
The Seagulls are 3rd in the Premier League table and they are 5 points behind early leaders Manchester City and just a couple of points behind defending Champions Arsenal. They have a 2-0-1 away record in the Premier League where Brighton have scored 10 goals and conceded 4.
Brighton thumped Crystal Palace 5-0 at home last Sunday and that was a sixth win in a row in all competitions, although the run was ended in the goalless draw at Jablonec on Thursday. It is a result that ended a sequence of 3 away wins in a row in all competitions, but Brighton will still travel to Merseyside knowing they have won consecutive away Premier League games.
Pascal Struijk, Mats Wieffer and Yankuba Minteh are all edging closer to a return, while Fabian Hurzeler is likely going to bring back a raft of first team players that were not involved in the Conference League a few days ago.
Head to Head
Both Premier League games were won by the home team last season and Liverpool also beat Brighton at Anfield in the FA Cup Fourth Round.
Those two home wins means Liverpool have beaten Brighton 4 times in a row in front of the Anfield crowd.
Prediction
We are moving into that time of the season where stormy weather is going to be affecting parts of the United Kingdom and Europe and this is a weekend where many parts of the country will be under a warning about the conditions to be faced.
It is the case for Anfield on Sunday where Liverpool host Brighton as rain and heavy winds are set to have an impact on the match.
That has to be a disappointment to many with this looking like the game of the weekend on paper as two teams managed by two attacking managers would have likely created a lot of entertainment.
This may still be the case, but the conditions expected will make things that much tougher for both teams.
Brighton have been in the superior form and there cannot have been too many times Liverpool would be odds against to beat them at home.
However, Liverpool have beaten Brighton 4 times in a row at Anfield and they just earned a solid win over Villarreal, while also having a couple more days of rest. The away team did rest a number of players for the Conference League game on Thursday, but Liverpool should be prepared as they look to end a strong run put together by The Seagulls.
A lack of home goals has been a concern for Liverpool, especially in the Premier League, but they will have noted some of the chances Brighton have given up.
At the same time, Brighton will not be intimidated by facing this Liverpool team and they can continue their own solid attacking play by finding a way to earn at least four shots on target.
This is a number that the last five visiting teams to Anfield have managed, while Brighton have a group of players willing to take shots from where they find spaces that can see them become the latest to hit that mark.
