English League One
2011-12-10 - Walsall vs Charlton Athletic
A Sports Betting Pick by ArmchairPunter
Football – England – League One
Saturday 10th December 2011 – Kickoff: 1500hrs
Hosts Walsall find themselves in the bottom four of the relegation zone in League One and entertaining league leaders Charlton Athletic at their Bescot Stadium ground on Saturday, so Walsall face a daunting task of getting something from this match.
Walsall
The Saddlers, without a win in their last six matches face an almost impossible task of gaining points in this fixture to climb out of the relegation places.
Walsall have picked up just two points from the last available 18 with draws at Huddersfield Town and Stevenage, ordinarily great results, but at home it’s just one win in their last nine matches (a 1-0 win over poor Preston NE), and they’ll be keen to halt a three-match losing streak after losses to Exeter City, MK Dons and Bury.
Walsall’s home record therefore isn’t great and stands at 2-3-5 9/14, and the signs aren’t good for a result against Charlton given that Walsall’s only successes at home so far have come against Leyton Orient (18th place) and Preston NE (14th place).
In terms of goals, Alex Nicholls, William Grigg and Jonathan Macken (3 goals apiece) are the leading goalscorers for a Walsall team who have, quite frankly, been very disappointing in their scoring abilities so far.
Charlton Athletic
Visitors Charlton Athletic are not only leaders in League One, but they also lead the away goals in the division with 19 goals.
The Addicks’ away record stands at an impressive 8-1-1 19/7, and they are on a six match winning sequence with recent home wins over Carlisle United, Preston NE and Huddersfield Town (and in turn, ended The Terriers fine unbeaten run), while recording away wins at Wycombe Wanderers, Hartlepool United and Brentford, along with an earlier win at Sheffield United.
They are looking every bit champions of League One at the moment, but will need to be careful of complacency when they travel to Walsall. When talking about firepower, the name Bradley Wright-Phillips is never far away from conversations regarding strikers in League One.
He’s racked up 12 goals, 7 assists so far, and if Charlton can keep hold of him until the end of the season they should be well positioned for automatic promotion back into the Championship.
In addition, midfielders Danny Hollands (5 goals, 2 assists), Johnnie Jackson (7 goals, 5 assists) and Yann Kermorgant (5 goals) have given great back-up performances along with Paul Hayes and Danny Green who have chipped in with 5 and 4 assists respectively.
The Betting Verdict :
Depth and quality should be enough to see Charlton through here in this one and I don’t often back an away side for a straight win but I’ll take a chance on Charlton in this fixture.
