Football : League of Nations
6th September 2018 – Kickoff 21:45 [Wales Time]
Introduction:
This is the match in Group 4 of the B division of the UEFA's League of Nations which will be between Wales and Ireland, where both sides failed to qualify for the World Cup in Russia. Interestingly they were in the same group of qualifiers then as well. Then Ireland finished second in the group after a 1-0 victory over Wales, but they later failed to get through in the playoffs.
Wales
That defeat by Ireland at home was the only defeat that Wales had experienced at the World Cup qualifiers, but it was costly as it eventually cost them a place in the playoffs as they finished third in the standings with two points less than Ireland and four points behhind leaders Serbia. No doubt this was a big dissappointment after playing the EURO semi-finals in France two years ago, but in the end the defeat to Ireland was fatal for them. Now they have a chance to get revenge over them at least in the League of Nations.
This will also be the first match under new coach Giggs. In his three friendly matches they made a 6-0 win over China, a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay and a goalless draw with Mexico. The good news for Giggs ahead of this match is that Bale and Ramsey will be featured for them in this match. However, while defender Taylor and strikers Robson-Cano and Wilson are out of the side due to injuries.
Ireland
Ireland also missed the World Cup and they failed at the last hurdle. After they finished second in their qualifying group, and in the first match of the playoffs with Denmark, they played well away from home and got a goalless draw. But then just when it was expected they would finish the job on home soil, they were beaten by 5-1.
However, they have still kept faith with coach O'Neill as their head coach. They have played three friendly matches since the world cup qualifers. They lost to Turkey by 1-0 and France 2-0, then they beat USA at home by 2-1. Coach O'Neill will not be able to count on the likes of midfielders McCarthy, Arter, Brady and McClean and strikers Long and Hogan due to injuries as well as poor form.
