Liverpool
Most Liverpool fans will recognise their biggest rival in preventing them from winning a first English League title since 1990 is Manchester City and so the gap that has been built to the defending Champions will be exciting for them. However no one is going to want to jinx things at the moment and that means there will be a real demand placed on the players to keep things ticking forward.
It would have been the case for this game regardless of the League positioning as the first Merseyside derby of the season is set to be played, but Liverpool being 8 points clear of Leicester City and 11 points clear of Manchester City going into December is a huge step towards the Premier League title. The Reds held off Brighton on Saturday to improve to 7-0-0 at Anfield in the Premier League this season, although it was another game without a clean sheet.
Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 15 games in all competitions, and they have now won 5 of their last 6 after the 2-1 success over Brighton last time out. They have won 9 of 11 home games in all competitions this season, while Liverpool have won 14 in a row at Anfield in the Premier League.
Alisson is suspended after being sent off on Saturday so Adrian will be deputising yet again between the sticks.
Everton
Marco Silva cannot be happy with the VAR system being used by the Premier League for the first time this season and his Everton team were on the wrong side of another decision made by the technology on Sunday. The winning Leicester City goal was awarded after initially being ruled offside and that has heaped the pressure on Silva who has to know his superiors are looking for his replacement.
That is a very difficult environment to work in and Silva has not helped himself with recent results Everton have produced. His team have slipped to 17th in the Premier League table and 2 points clear of the bottom three with every chance of falling into the relegation positions by the end of this round of games. The Toffees have a 1-1-5 record away from home where they have scored 6 goals and conceded 12.
Everton had been unbeaten in 3 games in all competitions, but defeats to Norwich City and Leicester City have seen the board begin to make managerial replacement plans. They did win at Southampton prior to the November international break, but that has been a rare success for Everton who have lost 5 of their last 6 on their travels in the Premier League.
Seamus Coleman and Fabian Delph look set to miss out, but Theo Walcott is hoping to be passed fit.
Head to Head
Liverpool took four points from Everton in the Premier League last season, but needed a goal deep into injury time to beat them 1-0 at Anfield.
Liverpool have won 4 of the last 5 Merseyside derby games played at Anfield, while they are unbeaten in 21 at home against Everton.
Prediction
The first Merseyside derby game of the season sees Liverpool and Everton in contrasting moods with the former leading the way in the Premier League and the latter on the verge of replacing manager Marco Silva.
That change could come as soon as Thursday morning if Everton were to lose this game and then fall into the bottom three if Southampton were to win their home League game against Norwich City on the same evening. It is not often a manager is given a couple of votes of confidence, but that has been the case for Silva who has almost lost his job after Everton's home defeat to Norwich City and then late loss at Leicester City.
Picking his players up from that defeat at the King Power Stadium is going to very difficult for Silva and this is as tough a test for Everton as they come. The side have lost 5 of their last 6 away Premier League games and have been conceding far too many goals while not having the same threat in the opposition final third and I do think they will struggle to cope with the home team.
In saying that Liverpool have been far from at full tilt themselves and they continue to leak goals, although it has yet to be a situation which has led to dropped Premier League points at Anfield. They have yet to have a home clean sheet in all competitions and Liverpool are now going back to Adrian for one game in goal after Alisson was sent off in the win over Brighton.
Adrian has certainly left the defence feeling vulnerable, but Liverpool have scored goals for fun at home and I would worry for Everton if they fall behind in this one. The front three should be rested having seen two of those players withdrawn on Saturday to earn some minutes of recovery and I think Everton are going to find it very difficult to contain this team.
The two League games between these clubs were very tight last season, but I think Liverpool can make life a bit easier for themselves this time around. With an additional day between games compared with Everton, I think Liverpool will be the final game that Marco Silva manages for the blue side of Merseyside and I think the home team are going to produce a relatively comfortable win on the night.
