Aston Villa
This may not have been the started expected from Aston Villa to the 2025/26 season, but Unai Emery and his squad have to be feeling better approaching the October international break. Two wins over the last week will have just given the team a lift and Aston Villa look especially strong in the Europa League where the manager has had considerable success in previous stops.
That does not mean the Premier League will be pushed aside and Aston Villa earned a first victory of the domestic season last Sunday to move into 16th place in the standings and with 6 points on the board. Those first three points were earned in a home win over Fulham and Aston Villa now have a 1-1-1 record at Villa Park, which was a fortress for them last season.
Aston Villa had to weather a big storm in Rotterdam, but eventually prevailed against Feyenoord and that does mean they have won 3 in a row in all competitions. Two of those wins have been in the Europa League, but that will still have helped the confidence within the squad as the players look for a third straight win at Villa Park following victories over Bologna and Fulham.
Emi Martinez was injured in the warm-up on Thursday and may have to sit out, while Jadon Sancho has been dealing with an illness and has to be considered doubtful. Some changes will be made to the first eleven, but the squad is likely to be without Tyrone Mings, Amadou Onana, Ross Barkley and Youri Tielemens for at least one more match.
Burnley
In the main you have to believe that Scott Parker is pretty content with what he has seen from his Burnley squad, but he will still be demanding a much better performance than what was produced in the big loss at the Etihad Stadium last weekend. A full week of preparation has been put into this last League fixture before the October international break and Burnley will want to show an improved defensive effort.
They may be 18th in the Premier League table, but Burnley have 4 points on the board and that is after negotiating what has been a difficult opening fixture list. It doesn't get much easier on Sunday for a team that has a 0-0-3 away record in the Premier League and have scored 3 goals, but conceded 11 in those fixtures.
Burnley won back to back fixtures in August against Sunderland and Derby County, but they have not won any of their last 5 games in all competitions and lost 4 of those matches. The 3 away losses in the Premier League have been at Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Manchester City and Burnley have conceded at least three goals in each defeat.
Connor Roberts could potentially be involved this weekend, but Jordan Beyer will have to use the two week break to build up fitness for a return.
Head to Head
Two seasons ago, Aston Villa won both Premier League games played against Burnley and scored three times in each victory.
Before that win in December 2023, Aston Villa had not won any of 4 home games against Burnley, although 3 in a row at Villa Park had ended in draws.
Prediction
Playing in Europe during the week and then the Premier League at the weekend is challenging for any Club and it has been something that has perhaps been a bigger problem for Aston Villa compared with most.
However, they followed the home win over Bologna in the Europa League with another over Fulham last Sunday and Unai Emery's team have some momentum behind them after another European success in Rotterdam.
The squad is a little stretched at the moment and that is an issue, but there are signs that some of the key players are getting back up to speed.
This is another test for Aston Villa as they look to show they are getting closer to their best, even if they are hosting a Burnley team that have been really vulnerable defensively in all three away Premier League games played.
Scott Parker will point out the Stadiums that Burnley have visited as a contributing factor, but playing at Villa Park is not going to be much easier and his team need to show a bit more resilience. Big mistakes at the back cost them at Manchester City, although Burnley have shown they can spring out on the break and challenge opponents, even on their travels at this level.
It will certainly give them something to believe in when making the trop to the West Midlands to take on a team that is still a little vulnerable.
However, if Burnley are continuing to make the mistakes that have been evident early this season, Aston Villa have shown they can punish teams.
The goals are beginning to show up again and Aston Villa may have enough about them to edge to the three points and keep the positive momentum that has been built up through to the middle of the month.
