Bournemouth
The middle portion of the Premier League is very tightly congested and a place in the top six looks wide open for one of the clubs to put together a strong run and earn a spot in the Europa League (or perhaps better). One of those surging up the League standings is Bournemouth who continue to play with real confidence over soon to be departing manager Andoni Iraola after an impressive 1-2 win at St James' Park on Saturday.
Most are reporting that Bournemouth are close to appointing Marco Rose as the next manager of the club, but the focus for now is to finish as high as possible and earn a spot in European Football that the club has been craving. The Cherries are up into 8th place in the Premier League table and have the same number of points as 6th placed Chelsea, and Bournemouth will be bidding to improve the 6-8-2 record at the Vitality Stadium in the top flight.
Bournemouth have been able to extend the unbeaten run to 14 games in all competitions in normal time, but they have also won back to back Premier League fixtures following a run of 5 consecutive top flight draws. Both of those wins have been in away League games, and Bournemouth will be looking to end a run of 4 draws in succession at the Vitality Stadium.
Lewis Cook, Julio Soler and Justin Kluivert are expected to miss out- all will be hopeful to return when Bournemouth are next scheduled to play in early May.
Leeds United
Daniel Farke has long stated that the Premier League is the priority for his Leeds United team, but two big wins have pushed them clear of the relegation zone. Importantly this has happened days before Leeds United are to play in the FA Cup Semi Final and supporters, the board and the players will be keen to put an exclamation point on the season by trying to win the Cup for the first time since 1972.
The last time Leeds United won any major silverware was when winning the last Division One title in 1992, but the manager has to make sure his players are not thinking ahead to Wembley Stadium on Wednesday evening. The three points earned against Wolves means Leeds United are 8 points clear of the bottom three with five League games to play, but they will have to be focused having put together a 2-7-7 away record.
Leeds United are unbeaten in 6 games in all competitions, but turning draws into wins has been a huge boost for them after League victories over Manchester United and Wolves. The side have only lost 1 of the last 13 away games in all competitions, but had won just once in that time before the victory at Old Trafford.
Joe Rodon was on the bench on Saturday, but both Anton Stach and Daniel James are hoping to return in time for the FA Cup Semi Final.
Head to Head
These two teams played out a 2-2 draw at Elland Road earlier this season.
They meet at the Vitality Stadium for the first time since April 2023, but the last 4 hosted by Bournemouth against Leeds United have produced two identical scores.
In half of those games, Bournemouth have beaten Leeds United 4-1 here, including that meeting in April 2023.
However, the other 2 games in that 4 game run have seen Leeds United return to Yorkshire with a 1-3 victory under their belt.
Prediction
Both Bournemouth and Leeds United produced big time three points this past weekend and this should be a fixture featuring two teams in confident mood.
That is what happens when you can put together a strong run of form and it could develop into an entertaining affair on the South Coast.
The Leeds United win over Wolves has pushed them 8 points clear of the relegation zone and Daniel Farke has to feel it is enough of a buffer to ensure another campaign in the top flight. He will still be reminding his players that there is work to do when mathematically Leeds United can still be relegated, but two big Premier League wins has put them in a very strong position.
So with that said, the challenge for the manager is keeping the team focused and not thinking ahead to a big FA Cup Semi Final to be played this weekend.
It is not going to be easy and any loss of focus would be a mistake for Leeds United when visiting a Bournemouth team that have also returned from the March international break to win back to back Premier League games.
Those wins has put Bournemouth right in the thick of the chase for European Football and even Andoni Iraola's announcement that he is leaving the club in the summer has not had a negative impact on the squad. The feeling is that most of the players would have expected this decision to be made and they have shown how much they enjoy playing under the manager by creating huge chances in the win at Newcastle United.
Home form has been a bit more sketchy- they are hard to beat here, but Bournemouth have been held to 4 straight Premier League draws in front of the home supporters.
There has been little wrong with the chances created, but Bournemouth have not been watertight at the back and we could see another fixture between these two clubs end with at least three goals shared out.
Four were shared in the 2-2 draw at Elland Road, and that means 9 of the last 12 between the clubs have finished with at least three goals produced in the fixture. The last 4 hosted by Bournemouth have done the same and it does feel like there will be a few goals shared out in this one with both in good positions in the Division.
Leeds United may have one eye towards the weekend and that may just give Bournemouth the edge.
There is no denying that Leeds United have shown resilience away from home, but Bournemouth's focus may just see them do enough to edge past the visiting team and at odds against, that is the play.
The Pick :
Bournemouth 2-1 Leeds United
