Mainz could hardly have made a better start to the new German football season. They smashed fifth-tier Krieschow 9-0 in the DFB Cup last week, with Phillip Tietz scoring four times and Nadiem Amiri producing a superb long-range free-kick.
New signing Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer also marked his debut with a goal. It was only a cup tie against lower-league opposition, but the attacking numbers were certainly encouraging.
Mainz finished 10th last season after a fairly uneven campaign, so the aim now is to push higher. They have plenty of familiar attacking options, including Amiri, Tietz and Lee Jae-sung, while the home crowd should give them another edge here.
The main question is whether they can turn that cup confidence into the same level of intensity against a newly promoted side.

SC Paderborn also got through the cup without too much trouble, beating Phönix Lübeck 4-2. Gabriel Vidović scored on his debut, while SC Paderborn showed the attacking intent that helped them win promotion from 2.Bundesliga.
They averaged around 53% possession last season and were one of the more aggressive pressing teams in the second division, so they are unlikely to simply sit back at Mainz.
That could make this a lively game. SC Paderborn scored regularly on their way to promotion and have enough pace and movement to test Mainz, but the step up in quality is significant.
SC Paderborn’s cup win also came against fourth-tier opposition, so this is the first proper test of how quickly they can adapt to Bundesliga football.

Both sides arrive after scoring freely in the German Cup, and SC Paderborn's style should give Mainz opportunities while also leaving some space at the other end.
The four previous Bundesliga meetings ended in three wins for Mainz and one draw, and they are once again favorites to win.
I expect Mainz to have too much quality at home, but SC Paderborn should make this more competitive.
Mainz should be able to barely edge it, but I am not confident backing them, and I believe we will see goals in both nets. Take both teams to score in this match.
