Köln
Köln had to work for their place in the DFB Cup second round, coming from 1-0 down at Würzburger Kickers to win 2-1 last week. Isak Johannesson was the difference, scoring both goals after the break. It was not a perfect performance, but getting through a tricky away cup tie was a useful start for René Wagner's side.
The bigger story around Köln is Saïd El Mala. The winger was one of their standout players last season and remains the main attacking threat after Borussia Dortmund ended their interest in signing him.
Köln’s priority is first and foremost staying up, but home games like this are where they need to collect points this season.
TSG Hoffenheim
TSG Hoffenheim arrive with a much more convincing cup result. They beat Erzgebirge Aue 4-0, with Patrick Wimmer scoring twice and Wouter Burger and Max Moerstedt also getting on the scoresheet. Wimmer in particular looks worth keeping an eye on after a strong cup outing.
There is good reason to take TSG Hoffenheim seriously this season. Christian Ilzer turned them around last year and guided them to 61 points and a sixth-place finish, earning Europa League football. They have also kept Fisnik Asllani, who was one of their key attacking players last season, while adding more depth to an already strong squad.
The head-to-head slightly favors TSG Hoffenheim, who have won 14 of the 33 Bundesliga meetings compared with Köln’s 10.
However, two of the last three have ended level, including a 1-1 draw in Köln last season when Ragnar Ache scored a superb equaliser.
The Betting Verdict
TSG Hoffenheim look the stronger side on paper, but this is not an easy away game. Köln have the home crowd behind them and should be competitive, especially if El Mala gets room to run at the TSG Hoffenheim defense.
The goals market looks more appealing. TSG Hoffenheim scored four in the cup, and Köln have enough attacking quality to contribute, while the last meeting here finished 1-1.
I lean towards TSG Hoffenheim, but I would rather have some insurance than take the away win outright. My best bet here is backing TSG Hoffenheim Draw No Bet.
