VfL Bochum got relegated from the German Bundesliga two seasons ago, and in their first season in 2.Bundesliga, they finished mid-table last season. They hope for better this time around, possibly getting involved in the Bundesliga promotion battle as an outsider.
This is their third game this 2.Bundesliga season, and VfL Bochum have responded well after losing their opener 0-1 at home to Hertha Berlin. They followed that with a controlled 0-1 away victory at Eintracht Braunschweig, Philipp Hofmann settling the game in the first half.
It was not spectacular, but VfL Bochum looked increasingly comfortable as the match went on and, importantly, have conceded only once in their first two league games. That defensive stability is probably the biggest reason to like the hosts here.
VfL Bochum have rebuilt heavily over the summer, bringing in 11 external signings, but they already look compact at the back.
The club's own pre-match comments also underline that confidence, with center-back Michael Steinwender describing the team as currently "very compact". At the other end, they need to become more clinical after scoring just once in two 2.Bundesliga rounds.
VfL Osnabrück
VfL Osnabrück is a newly promoted team from the German 3.Liga and immediately saw how much more difficult it is to play in a higher division.
They lost 4-3 at Heidenheim on opening day and then went down 0-3 at home to Magdeburg. Seven goals conceded in two games is the obvious concern, although the first result showed that the newly promoted side can create chances and keep fighting even when games start going against them.
The trip to Bochum is another big test. VfL Osnabrück are coming off a week without a cup fixture, so they have had more time to prepare specifically for this game, while their traveling support is expected to be strong.
But the defensive issues have to be fixed quickly. VfL Bochum are unlikely to be as generous as Heidenheim were against them in the first round, and another early concession could make life very difficult for the visitors.
The Betting Verdict
The market has VfL Bochum at roughly 1.65, with the draw around 4.00 and VfL Osnabrück close to 4.70. That feels fair.
VfL Bochum have been far from explosive, but they look the more reliable side and have already shown they can win tight games.
I would not go all-in on the short home price, though. VfL Bochum's lack of goals is the one concern, while VfL Osnabrück have scored three times in two matches despite their poor start.

The overall picture is fairly clear. VfL Bochum are still finding their rhythm, but they are defending well and have the stronger squad. VfL Osnabrück have shown fight, but conceding seven in two games is a difficult starting point against a team of VfL Bochum's quality.
