The lowly Memphis Tigers (0-1) are on the road this week to play at East Carolina (1-0). East Carolina is currently listed a 13.5 point favorite over the Tigers.
Memphis began their season with a whimper last weekend, losing 49-7 to Mississippi State and getting outgained by over 300 yards. Going back to last season, they have been outscored 377-200 and have been outgained by over 1100 yards. No need for much more analysis on them – they are just terrible. But, their basketball team is great!
On the other hand, East Carolina has been a good mid-level team for years. They aren’t going to win any national championships, but they aren’t going to lose too many games to bad opponents. Last week they scored a touchdown on the very last play of the game to beat a decent Tulsa team 51-49.
New head coach Ruffin McNeill was able to get a win in his debut after moving over from Texas Tech in the offseason, where he was the defensive coordinator.
New QB Dominique Davis threw 5 TD passes in his first game with 383 yards passing.
East Carolina may struggle a bit on defense, but that won’t matter too much against Memphis. Tulsa has a very good offense that exposed ECU’s weaknesses. Memphis doesn’t have the talent to do that. On the other hand East Carolina will be able to score easily on the Memphis defense and will be playing at home again.
For anyone that would like more numbers to back up these claims, I have good news for you. Memphis is 2-8 ATS in their last 10 overall and 1-7 ATS in their last 8 road games. They are also 1-11 ATS in this series. East Carolina is 7-3 ATS in their 10 games.
These teams play every year and Memphis hasn’t won since 2005. ECU beat Memphis at Memphis last year 38-19 and 56-40 in 2007. In 2008, ECU was at home and beat Memphis 30-10.
